To quote Russell Simmons, “The truth sells.” In the event that, that is truly the case, this is a guy that you should keep an eye on. With the honesty & confidence of Kanye, the word play of Ludacris, the laid back energy of a young Snoop & a delivery all his own, DeMarus is set to be an artist that will be around for a while. Making real music that people can relate to, is what is at the top of his priority list when going into creative mode he said. Originally from Ft. Wayne, Indiana, but now residing in Atlanta, Georgia, DeMarus is no rookie to the stage or the mic. Starting opposite of most rappers, talent shows were how he made his way into the local hip-hop scene. “The immediate response taught me to appeal to different audiences” he said. After a few years of doing shows & then recording with other artists, DeMarus released his first solo album entitled THE SHINING. The album did relatively well locally, selling just over one thousand units. His newest release entitled G.A.M.E. (Grown A$$ Man Energy) is twelve tracks, that are chocked full of content & creative wordplay. On songs like “22 Niggaz” he speaks on the gratuitous use of the “N” word in hip-hop. “Be without you” a duet with the late Aaliyah, is an ode to hip-hop; which serves a brilliant display of his storytelling ability. Party Girl is a complete crossover track that sounds more pop / alternative hip-hop than anything else. The production is hot. It sounds much more like an album than a mixtape. In this writer’s opinion, with the right team & the right situation, this is an artist that could go far. He’s definitely not what we’re used to hearing, but that could serve as a breath of fresh air along with the new wave “genuine” hip-hop artists that seem to be hitting the scene (i.e. Wale, Kid Cudi, Drake, B.O.B. etc.). He’s a great storyteller and he’s believable, which is what seems to be missing from hip-hip. He seems like he’s got a lot of potential. Time will tell.
