When you ask Ellicott City, Maryland native Doug Mayhle about how he came to be called “the Madman”, he’ll tell you the story of the nine-year-old girl who first called him by that name. Mayhle says, “In the spring of 2003 I was hired to play outside at a client’s home for a private party. Due to heavy coastal rains we moved indoors, creating a much more intimate setting. Between songs little Jessica (one of the client’s nieces) came to me and said ‘you’re a Madman’. When I asked her why she thought so, she told me to look at my face in the mirror while I’m singing. It was so precious (and true) that I instantly adopted it as a stage name.” Doug started on his musical journey about the time he learned to walk on his own. As a young child singing along with his favorite early influences such as Creedence Clearwater Revival and Steely Dan, he was encouraged and supported by his family who saw and heard his talent for singing and performing. By the time he was in middle school he had polished his talent enough to make the school band. Originally a drum player, it was not until his freshman year of high school that Doug first fell in love with the guitar; and, the idea of being a professional singer/songwriter and entertainer. During his high school years, he found that his ability to cover songs by almost any artist in any genre had set the stage for him to pursue his dream. Up until 2002 he did what most other musicians do, he worked for a living while finding as much time as possible to devote to his songwriting and performing. It was during those years that Doug found that his talent was not limited to any single instrument. He found that he was able to play piano, harmonica, mandolin, and percussion just as easily as he was able to pick up drums and guitar. This ability opened new doors of creativity in Doug’s songwriting and is apparent when you see him perform. It was in the spring of 2002 that he had finally decided to make music his full time job. Doug started off his career as a solo performer; and, thanks to his talent, hard work and determination he was soon in high demand as an entertainer in the Ocean City, Maryland area. It was not long before he expanded his horizons and began performing all over Maryland and Delaware. In November of 2002 Doug started an open-mic show on Thursdays at Whisker’s bar and grill in Ocean Pines. It ran for seven years and still holds the record as the longest running open-mic in the history of the Ocean City area. When asked why his open-mic lasted so long Doug says, “If you make the people feel welcome no matter what their skill level, they will come back week after week. Having the right venue owner, motivated musicians, and the right person running the show is what made the difference.” He could not have dreamed of the success and notoriety that this single show was to bestow upon him. Ask any music- loving local resident and you will find that he is very highly regarded in the Ocean City area. He is happy to see and support the new bands that have formed in the area because of his open-mic shows and his ability to unite the music community. His ability to unite is not limited to just musicians though. Whether it is with trivia questions, asking for requests, or just a short funny anecdote, he unites the crowd while performing and draws them in as a part of the show. That is where his true entertainment value is apparent. Doug is recording his first CD and is very optimistic about its success due to the response he has gotten from performing his original music in venues along the East Coast. His goals for the future are much the same as the dream he had as a boy; to entertain the world one venue at a time, and to become a well liked and respected member of the songwriting community. With his talent and motivation, and because he performs from the heart with great passion, Doug Mayhle is already well on his way to achieving these goals. You need only see him perform to know that the music within Doug is what defines him.
