POOP, part of a complete childhood... a childhood that has no end. LOUD! LOUD! Hear it and feel it... the sound of rebellion and wild animals. Untamed, set free and raging. Rock 'n' roll motherfuckers. Real loud! Shellshock LOUD! It might take your head off kind of loud. Pump your heart right into yer throat kind of loud. Hear it. See it. Feel it. Taste it kind of loud that is all too crazy, too fucked up and primal that only screaming and howling - pouring more noise onto ground zero is the only thing that feels close to being right. Poop started way back in June of 1993. Rikk and Scott had always wanted to play in a band together but never had the opportunity to do so. Scott Hoogland was the singer of the band, The Mechanics. They were one of the only bands in OC that played original material. They were also the driving influence for some of Orange County biggest punk bands (Social Distortion, Agent Orange, The Adolescents, D.I., etc.). Rikk Agnew, on the other hand, played in most of the bands mentioned above as well as having put out 3 solo records. They recruited 3 others that were just as deranged to complete the band. Eddie Glass (Fu Manchu) played drums; Pete Manino played guitar & Mike Rousse (Adz, The Johns) played bass but that line-up was short lived. Mike left and Pete took over playing bass. The guys recruited Perry Giordano (Agent Orange, Partners in Crime, Mad Dog) to play bass on their short east coast tour while Pete returned to his guitar duties. Eddie would be the next one to leave and would be the start of a constant trend with the band. Chris ???? (Don’t remember his last name) would be the new drummer but soon he would be replaced by Glenn Daughtery. This line-up would head into the studio to record four songs that would become a limited released as a single on Posh Boy Records/Musical Tragedies. The song Desecration Generation ended up as the title track on a compilation arranged by Rikk (Rikk Agnew's Smash Demos vol.2). Pete would be the next member to leave, moving to San Francisco to live with his girlfriend and get his life together. Six months later, the band would see Glenn depart and the band took time off to find his replacement. His replacement would be Noah Lysek (Bonecrusher). He was an amazing drummer but unfortunately, scheduling problems would be too much for both the band and Noah to work out so it was back to the drawing board. Just when the band had started to give up hope in ever finding a drummer again, along came a young punk to fill the position. Viktor Salazar was to be the longest drummer the band has had since the band's inspection. The funny thing is he played his first show with the band and then had to wait almost eight years to play his second show. Shortly after Viktor's first show the band finally gained another guitar player, Steve Guevara. Rikk decided to disappear a month later leaving the band and its members to what fate had in store. This ultimately led to the band taking a break from playing... then in March of 2002, as luck would have it. All five members would attend the Adolescents reunion show at the Doll Hut. It was then and there decided that it was time for the band to return to the stage. With the last line-up intact, they started practicing again. Playing shows and adding a few new songs to the set, they finally decided it was time to record again. After three days of intense recording and a final day of mixing, the truth was painfully obvious. Viktor would rather be doing something else (playing guitar). The band started again searching for a new drummer. Tanner Parrott would take over drumming duties for only a brief time before he left due to starting his own business. This would see Steve trade in his guitar for a drum set on a few shows before ultimately leaving the band all together. Proceeding as a four piece, Bobby Jones would be the next drummer to take over before getting arrested a short time later. As luck would have it, a young punk guitar player who showed up to one of the band's practices to get some merch, would become the band's newest guitar player. Leo Ulfelder (Terezodu) would be the band's youngest member to date (He was in kindergarten when the band started). Leo worked well with Rikk and also learned a lot from the veteran musician. The band still without a drummer got in contact with Garth Jacobs. Being a former member of Mad Bomber (Scott & Perry's project while the band took a break back in the late 90's), he knew quite a few of the songs and worked his way through the set quickly. He, too, would end up leaving stranding the band without a drummer. At this point, Rikk's nephew's band had an amazing drummer and he was looking for another project to occupy his time. Arnie O'Dell was an explosive drummer who played faster than OC had ever seen. He had another former band mate that was looking for a new band as well, so Jim Moser would become Poop's third guitar player. At this point, Poop had already established themselves as one of the loudest bands in OC but after Jim was added, Poop earned themselves the title of OC loudest band, if not the loudest band in southern California. Arnie, being the nice guy he was, filled in as drummer for a touring band from Florida. He got to Florida only to find he had no way to get home so he decided to stay until he had enough money to get back to California. In the mean time, Viktor filled in for a few shows. Eventually Arnie returned but he would be the next member to depart with Rikk filling in at practice but the band didn't waste any time finding one of their former drummers to play. Jim followed in Arnie's footsteps. Bobby had served his time and was just waiting for an opportunity to play again. The band had been asked to be tour support for a little known UK band that was touring the states for the first time. It would be a perfect bill to put on any marquee, Sick on the Bus and Poop. Leave it to Poop's luck and Bobby's stupidity, but the day the band was to play our first show of the tour, Bobby's girlfriend called and told us Bobby had been arrested again. Scrambling to find someone to fill in for the show that night and also someone to fill in for the actual tour, the first former member to step up and help was Steve but he couldn't do the actual tour because of his work schedule so the tour would be handled by Viktor (again). Viktor did stay around a few more shows after that but with work and his other band; Poop would prove to be too much. So again, the band set out to find another drummer. Matt Freyaldenhoven answered a Craigslist ad for a replacement drummer. After talking with him the band realized that he and Rikk were old friends. Rikk had produced his former band's (Confederate) record many years ago. Matt played his first show with having only one practice with the band. Quite a feat for any drummer, I must say. At this point, everyone was getting frustrated that Rikk wasn't showing up to shows and when he turned up in rehab; the band knew he would be taking a vacation from the band. Poop played only 2 shows all of 2007. It was during this time that the band lost our long time bass player, Perry. He was asked to join the band, Agent Orange. Perry tried to play in both bands but it meant less shows for Poop. There was no way Perry could maintain both bands. By this point, Rikk had returned from his vacation and brought with him Poop's only female member. Emmita Johnson came in to play bass for the band. She had played with Rikk's niece in the band, RagTyme but they had broken up a while ago. The band also had to find a new drummer which meant borrowing a drummer from Leo's other band. Alex Schultz would be the next drummer to take control of the throne but he soon left to pursue higher education. Since Alex had informed the band of his future plans, the band had a chance to line-up another drummer to take his place. Christian Gutierrez also played for a local band called The Bonzos. The Bonzos were having their own problems with band members not showing up to shows or practice. Christian was quit a joker showing up to play in a leopard print thong and pink light-up bunny ears. At this point the band was gearing up for a west coast tour with One Way System and Billyclub so it was rather surprising when Christian stopped coming to practice. Luckily, for the band, the manager had been talking to a drummer in Indianapolis. He was fed up with bands that didn’t want to tour and only play local shows. He agreed to come to California and play in Poop but there was a catch; he would have to finish up his legal commitment before he could leave. After 2 ½ years of waiting he was finally ready to start his journey. Steve Pratt drove from Indianapolis to California in about 3 days. He had barely enough time to learn the songs before the band set out on a 2 week tour up the west coast and back. The band had finally found a drummer that wasn’t going anywhere. Instead, after getting back from tour, Leo quit and Rikk started to flake out on various shows. Pretty soon, Emmita started flaking out as well. Scott and Steve were the only remaining members with neither one of them wanting to give up on the band; they started looking for people to fill in blanks. To be continued...
