There is a tangible electricity when performing artists have a solid musical chemistry. When Ginger Doss and Bekah Kelso first met in 2002, creative sparks definitely began to fly. One was a career musician/songwriter pondering a transition from a band to a solo career. The other was just beginning to test the waters of the infamous music business and stretching her wings as an artist. Though they were coming from two different places in life and two different musical styles, they found a deep connection in their combined quest for something new. While Ginger was still a member of her then band Dreamtrybe, she and Bekah began casual “jam sessions” – that familiar first step where so many musicians past and present have begun their journeys together. Right away, their voices fell into synch, almost effortlessly finding harmony niches in each other’s songs as though they’d sung them a thousand times before. It was in 2006 when Ginger found she was ready to break out on her own and begin her solo career. But as the band parted, Ginger and Bekah found themselves torn. Both had become passionate about pursuing solo careers. But they’d found something quite rare in each other: a melding of the minds – spiritually, musically, and creatively. They weren’t about to let that go. The two artists wanted to have the best of both worlds by working in a project together AND pursuing their solo careers at the same time. It was then that they began toying with an idea: as solo artists, they could compliment each other’s music on stage and combine business efforts off stage. GBmojo was born and it was the perfect solution. “When first starting out, an indie singer/songwriter really has their work cut out for them. It can be very difficult to manage all of the different aspects of your career on your own.” Bekah remembers,“We started to see that we could work together as business partners, combining efforts, resources, and creativity to help both our careers. It was just icing on the cake of an already strong and promising relationship.” Ginger continues, “It’s amazing to work with someone who’s in the exact same place as you are, dealing with all the same challenges and triumphs in their own careers. It’s a beautiful and rare connection. It doesn’t hurt that we absolutely love what we’re doing and the music we’re making. And our fans really like it too.” The formula is definitely working. This “duo of solo artists” has spent the last 2 years working in a co-op format gaining momentum and an ever-widening fan base. Audiences love how Doss, with her smoky alto voice and piano-rock moxie; and Kelso, with her soul-folk style and powerful sultry tone, take turns leading the show while the other seamlessly floats to a supporting role. The passion rings clear in their respective music and lyrics and only multiplies when they sing together. The two self-dubbed gypsies bring a unique blend of artistry, using their songs and voices to reach out to the listener. They sing about self-empowerment, about rising above conflict and discrimination. They pour themselves into songs about loss and love and saving the planet, their little green hearts beating for all to hear. Unmistakable themes of universal spirituality are evident in almost all of their music – always delivered with conviction and swagger and sometimes, humor as well. Kelso and Doss, though still loosely based in Austin TX, are currently touring most of the year in support of their new albums - Bekah Kelso's "Mud Blossom" and Ginger Doss' "This Cocoon". Just like their live shows, both of these exciting new records successfully showcase the individual artist’s style as well as delivering that signature harmony sound that has worked so well for them. They continue trading songs and making waves.
