i've played several types of music at different periods in my life... classical piano, jazz, r&b. i grew interested in new age and world music while learning to blow a didjiridoo, and really enjoy the openness of the form and the nearly endless sound pallet.
for me, music is a language and the various styles and genres are its' dialects. it's the only truly universal language, and no matter the dialect, we all seem to understand what is being said.
music has been referred to as " the divine disease", one that i caught studying classical piano as a child. there have been r&b bands, jazz trio's and quartets, solo gigs, and a career as a music therapist working with autistic kids, and even a stint as a radio dj on a college radio show. one language, many dialects. and because unlike words and sentences, notes and musical phrases have no specific definitions, no syntax to wrestle with, it is able to travel a more direct path to our centers of understanding and feeling. less thinking and little or no confusion over meaning, or intent. there is a direct and instant connection made between the musician and listener that is much different, and if may i speculate more profound than that between a speaker and listener.
