All of the Grrlz claim influences deeply rooted in classic rock, but they aren't adversed to pulling in ideas that stray from that tradition and making them meld with a very roots rock sound. If you can imagine Melissa Etheridge singing lead for The Black Crowes, or sitting in with The Staple Singers, you're about halfway home to understanding Grrlz Will Be Boiz. It begins with tight rhythms and heavy back beats and a laid back, funky bass groove. Add to that haunting melodic guitar leads that will often take you to a place that's gritty and much harder or at times crunchy, rhythmic "waka-chicka" power chords that make you want to get up and dance. Vocals follow the examples of heavy hitting, raspy female contraltos like Janis Joplin and Dusty Springfield. What comes from the Grrlz is, in their words, "organic." Songs are born of late nights in the practice room, each building on the brain child of another, every member of the band in sync and anticipating where the others want to go creating an intense energy every drop of which is poured into the work, and translates easily both in recording and on stage. GWBB formed in the Spring of 2008 in Austin Tx and in just over a year has played a large number of shows in Central Texas to crowds that continue to grow weekly. The growing buzz, reputation with venues, and positive response to their independent EP release, "How We Ended Up This Way" have served them well recently, earning them coveted spots in the annual FriendsFest Women's Music Festival in Dripping Springs, TX in April 2009, the Austin Pride Festival in June 2009 and the kick-off party for the Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival in Sept. 2009- the biggest and longest running LGBTQ film festival in the Southwest. During the 2009 SXSW conference in Austin, GWBB was tapped by a local venue owner with whom they'd worked before to fill a vacated spot on a showcase hosted by the Viper Room, where they had the opportunity to co-bill with The Orchard distribution artists God-des and She. After always being a self motivated, self promoted group, GWWB's efforts paid off when only a few weeks after registration with ReverbNation, The Grrlz climbed high on the charts for Austin area Rock bands, rising as high as #27 and charting consistently in the Top 50. GWBB are currently working with The Dept. of Sound and Bradley Calhoun to produce their first full length album with a due date somewhere near the start of 2010. While their progress as a band has definitely been fast paced, GWBB remain grounded and dedicated to making sound decisions about their careers, while still continuing to make themselves better known and reach a wider audience.
