Growing up in Cobb County, Stephens discovered his passion for music at the ripe age of ten years old. Intrigued by the ambiguity and lyrical sustenance of rap music, an ambitious Rodney Stephens was determined to create a name for himself in world of music. He decided to acquire the stage name, “Young Gunna,” which epitomized his past, present, and future struggles, and represented his ineffable desire to achieve his musical potential. Young Gunna, sometimes referred to as “G,” or “Gunna,” was determined to provide the world with a perspective into the complexities of the life of a talented black man simply trying to succeed. Young Gunna expresses his messages to a variety of musical stylings, in a lyrical concoction of vivid wordplay, intense content, and precise, almost poetic delivery. Realizing he had the ability to generate music, good music, Young Gunna began rapping and recording his lyrics, ultimately developing a number of music tracks. In an effort to gain exposure, Young Gunna began uploading his music to social websites such as Facebook, Myspace, and YouTube. Receiving an overwhelming amount of positive responses to his music caused Young Gunna to seriously pursue a career in the music business. Word of Young Gunna’s music spread, and he received offers to perform in multiple shows for clubs throughout Georgia such as Club Crucial, Figure 8, and the Red Train. Audiences were captivated by Gunna’s ability to freestyle all of his music. The majority of upcoming and established artists in the rap industry use pre-written material. The fact that Young Gunna’s lyrics are not pre-written allows him to be separated from other artists in the rap community. In Early 2009, Gunna’s perseverance was rewarded and he obtained his own studio. Young Gunna, in collaboration with Richard “No Doze” Dunlap, lives for the art of producing and performing. They are constantly in the studio creating music that will contribute to positively impacting the rap community.
