Crafted in four recording locations, with 17 American and Jordanian artists over two time zones and 6000 miles, Hana Malhas’ debut release Shapeshift is an introspective collection of songs
that reinforces her cross‐cultural collaborative experiences, while staying true to her firm rooting
in the indie folk‐pop sound. Some songs sound like old city streets, others like winter trees. With influences such as Feist, Laura Marling, and Ray LaMontagne her musical and lyrical sound shifts between sentimental and impassioned.
Shapeshift showcases an expressive vocal delivery that fluctuates between soft intensity and bold clarity. You may find yourself connecting to that voice, through words you’ve left unspoken – as a lover, an ex, a daughter, an outcast, or a witness. Hana explores the personal with fearless vulnerability, making observations about our multi‐layered
human experience across cultures. She composes on piano and guitar, and invited a diverse range of musicians
to layer the album songs with strong arrangements of instrumentation and harmony. The result is organic
musical diversity from song to song, with threads of stylistic consistency tying them together.
Her performances vary from a one‐woman setup, to intimate duo arrangements and full‐band configurations. She’s been playing in Jordan and around Michigan for over a year, and has shared the stage with national and local artists at venues ranging from intimate listening rooms to live music bars and summer festivals.
