Hubert “Blues” Lawhorn is an artist whose influences are as broad and varied as the musical trends that flourished during the time of his youth. Hubert’s music career began in the mid-sixties as a teenager growing up in the mid-west manufacturing town of Elkhart, Indiana. Hubert's father taught him his first couple of guitar chords and bought him an old silvertone guitar to play on. He also enjoyed listening to his cousin, guitarist Charles Lawhorn who had a popular regional band at that time. His rock and roll favorites were The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. As Hubert grew older and the sixties came to an end he found inspiration in the unique sounds of Muddy Waters, Chuck Rainy, Donald Duck Dunn and James Cotton. These blues men were performers that Hubert couldn’t seem to hear enough of and those sounds had a tremendous calling, a recognizable timeless quality that was revered by music lovers of all ages.The late sixties and early seventies were a time of musical change and the mid-western mega-rock regional band scene was taking off. In those days before shopping malls, downtown Elkhart was where Hubert would sometimes go to hang out with the younger crowd. The towns old post office had been converted into a teen club called The Electric Circuit, complete with florescent posters that would glow under black lights with the walls painted black; it was the epitome of "The hippy days". On Friday night, teen dances would be held and bands from all around the region could be heard. He would listen to local bands like Kopperfield, Magi or Coldwater Express, which were regional favorites. Elkhart's main street area also had a hippy hangout/coffee house called Partly Dave's where poetry and acoustic musicians could be heard; it was a unique time and place to be. Hubert’s early experiences as a musician were in various rock, pop and R&B bands in the Indiana and Michigan area. Because he was not yet over 18 years old, he would play at parties, street dances, fashion shows, even local political rallies. He also did the occasional club or bar but had to remain on the stage during breaks because of being a minor. As Hubert became of legal age he began to play countless shows at all types of venues and bands throughout the seventies. As the decade came to an end new styles of music began to emerge. Disco and punk began growing in popularity but Hubert found little interest in the new styles and started to focus more on blues as his real musical passion.In 1980 Hubert relocated to Los Angeles and within a couple of years moved on to Colorado where he currently makes his home. The Colorado music scene has been good to Hubert offering many musical opportunities and he has gained notoriety as a solid veteran of the music industry. He has had the pleasure of performing with and meeting some of the industry's greatest musicians such as BB King, James Cotton, Pine Top Perkins, Kim Wilson, Little Milton, Clay McClinton, Kim Stone, Mark May, Randall Dubis and Willie Houston. The list could go on and on. Hubert "Blues" is truly a solid traditional blues performer with many other talents as well, including writing, producing, managing and engineering.
