It was in the fall of 2007 that close friend and producer Dan Deurloo (of Epic Hero) heard several of the songs Huna had written and accumulated over the years, and he suggested that he document them. Huna was intrigued by the idea, and thought, “Hmm ... That would be a lot of fun." So the two set out to work on that documentation with some simple recordings at Deurloo’s studio -- After Rome Studio -- which during this time Huna felt he had one of the best things happen in life. After a long battle between working in the “real world” and composing on the side, Huna finally got a chance to reprioritize his life. (Well, I guess you could say he was forced to.) Huna, of small town Minnesota, jumped at the opportunity to make something of his dreams. With the help of Deurloo, who pulled from his experience with Epic Hero and past projects working with Grammy award winning songwriter Dan Wilson of Semisonic, Huna gathered up the best of his artistic creations he had on the backburner. This collaboration brought forth a mix of folk and contemporary pop, with a splash of retro 70's sound, in the form of his first album, "A Neighboring City." The beginning of Huna's professional music career began with a national tour as part of a dance group. That’s right, you read it correctly! This pop-folky, acoustic driven artist used to break it down while on stage. “Dance and hip hop is fun, and was an outlet for a very energizing performance, but the emotion I get from writing and playing the acoustic guitar and piano is incomparable." Huna has a base love of 30’s and 40’s music. When he is just hanging out around the house he always has it playing in the background. He states, “I love those styles because they put you in a state of mind that lets you reflect on life, helping you slow down and enjoy the moment.” Huna embarked on his musical instrumentation by first learning to play the piano at age seven. As he grew, both in age and height, he would develop his style by playing for hours upon hours through the nights, and sometimes into the mornings, in the living room of the rambler he grew up in. (Though he did take a break in his later childhood to pursue the life of a hockey player and meeting pretty girls.) While Huna didn’t even own his first guitar until he was in college, his execution on the guitar makes it seem like it has been a part of him his whole life. He has developed a great mixture of finger-picking-folk to contemporary chord playing. It lets you ride the emotion he creates without leaving you with the feeling that you are listening to the same thing over and over again. Huna's debut album, "A Neighboring City," is gaining popluarity as the record you can't push skip on. Out of the gate two songs have already taken first place on the new artist launching site OurStage (www.ourstage.com). Titles "Alibi" and "A Neighboring City" were both ranked number one in two different channels in back-to-back months. From playing summer series concerts in an intimate setting around a campfire, to shows in front of a gazillion people, Huna has performed for a variety of audiences. He has opened for more well known acts such as The Rembrandts, The Twilight Hours, and Epic Hero, but can also be seen at the local open mic taking a small audience on an emotional journey. The instant success of Huna’s music is not only attributed to his catchy hooks, but also the range of topics he writes about. He focuses on topics that reflect life’s best moments and the pain steaking trials we face to find those moments. He doesn't just write about love, but brings you into a place where you will muse spirituality, tradgedy, the pursuit of dreams, and the process we go through to overcome obstacles in achieving success in these areas. “The songs are about meeting the emotions of what you really feel and not running away. They are about chasing your dreams and not letting money dictate your choices." Huna says, “It's learning to fall in love instead of settling for the idea of love." He adds, “Throughout my songs, I am sorting out the spiritual side of life. I believe in an unconditional love that is bigger than all of us. My sound and this album [A Neighboring City], is about getting back to being real. We cannot forget to honor the past and the traditions that make us who we are.”
