About me- Since telling it like it is sincerely, is what I strive for in my art, …I choose to write my own bio . The past 10 years as a songwriter have been spent raising a daughter on my own , making sure she is growing up with all the tools she needs to navigate the new world. I have been meticulously documenting my songwriting and image while playing my guitar, performing regularly yet mostly staying pretty close to home. Many many times I have wondered if I was on the right path…if always being there to walk her to school in the morning was causing me to miss opportunities. Sometimes I have felt that I was a day late and a dollar short watching my friends/ colleagues jet off around the world. Luckily though, through all those years without touring in the machine, I have been fortunate and had a couple number one hits on aboriginal and college radio, placement in television and always something awesome around the corner to keep me going. Now that she is older and I have more freedom. I feel ready to take my music to the next level or more importantly…. Out There I am close to completing my 10th studio album with two time Juno winner Derek Miller as producer. It is a collection of songs from the past 4 years, many of which were written while she and I were living in a commune in New Mexico. I have called it “Land of wind and ghosts” which to me means that place we all feel that warm tingle…. whispers from our ancestors and hints from our angels to grow into whom we always meant to be. The alternate title “ Out on a limb” also encapsulates how I feel about where I am and is a nod to all the support that is out there for the arts in Canada. Something, as we all know is currently being threatened to it’s very core. Over the years I have been garnering support and encouragement from some spectacular people such a Dan Lanois, Bruce Allen and many brilliant folks in the aboriginal music community. The mad support of my die hard fans…you know who you are... have inspired me and taught me to follow my heart and that great success takes all forms. Big and Small. Meegwetch Jp
