Joi Veer Biography Silence and space will flurry into controlled mayhem like a whisper to a scream… ~ Joi Veer Joi has many musical influences, from early favorites such as Peter Gabriel, Graham Parker, U2, David Bowie, Elvis Costello, John Lennon, Petula Clark and James Taylor to the brilliance of Alanis Morissette, Goo Goo Dolls, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Jeff Buckley, Dave Matthews, Persephone’s Bees & Coldplay. Joi Veer has a new CD collection of his instrumental tracks called “UNSUNG” which are geared towards television and film. These tracks vary from children’s to fun quirky to vintage nostalgia to retro hip-hop to anthem-like action rock tunes. Placements on MTV’s “Exposed,” “Access Hollywood,” Food Network’s “Ace of Cakes,” “America’s Funniest Pets & People” and “Kids Space” have been achieved. In addition to the full and underscore versions, cut-downs, loops, music beds and stings are available. Joi’s previous CD, “PEARL DIVING” features fourteen songs that are naturals for dramatic film and reality television. This material has generated music placements on ABC’s “Men In Trees,” “American Idol Rewind,” “Access Hollywood,” an A&E special, Evil Knievel’s Wild Ride and was used extensively in the XX Winter Olympic Games, Torino 2006. Also, his song “Lost” has received airplay in the NY area. This time around, he teamed up with renowned producer, Armand John Petri (Goo Goo Dolls, Six Pence None The Richer, 10,000 Maniacs) who helped craft these recordings. In addition, Chuck Burgi, an accomplished drummer (Hall & Oates, Movin’ Out) produced 2 of the tracks. Joi Veer’s debut 12-song CD, “ON” features the rock rhythms of drummers Steve Holley (McCartney & Wings, Joe Cocker) & Shawn Pelton (Saturday Night Live, Shawn Colvin), as well as bassists Jeff Allen (Duncan Sheik) & Mark Egan (Joan Osborne, Marc Cohn). Also contributing were engineers Steve Addabbo (Suzanne Vega, Shelter Island Sound) and Pat Dillet (They Might Be Giants). “ON” has been embraced by e-zines, receiving reviews from THEGLOBALMUSE.COM, MUSICIANSREALM.COM, IMPACTPRESS.COM and SCORE!ROCKS.COM. It has received airplay on college and commercial radio stations in the NY/NJ and Boston areas. Recent placements include the songs “A Simple Wish” on FOX’s hit TV show “America’s Most Wanted,” and “Light Of Day” on Animal Planet’s “That’s My Baby.” His song “I Know What I Know” was in the Top-50 on broadbandtalentnet.com(Billboard), and featured in an ESPN sports presentation. In addition, he placed the song “Somewhere In Your Soul” on the TV show “Beyond Chance” on Lifetime Television hosted by Melissa Etheridge and in the feature film ”Hook, Line & Sinker,” and “The Cruelest Fate” in an indie short film, “Perceptions.” Artist Profile It is the song that drives this artist. Never bound by “formula,” Joi’s style has exploded through his gravitation to the guitar as his main songwriting tool. His drumming background has given him a keen awareness of rhythm and percussion that bubbles beneath his signature vocals delivering waves of fluid melody. There is a splash of “world beat” flavor countering and fusing the ever-present electric and acoustic guitars. The human experience is his most fascinating palette. The interaction and perspective of people are the substance of his lyrics which are woven through the fabric of infectious melodies. Whether a simple statement of emotion or a testimonial to Joi’s life experiences, the result is a brutally honest song written and delivered with conviction as an extension of himself. Joi constantly dares and re-defines his artistic license. His songs are conceptually, lyrically and musically engaging in their dynamics. "Pearl Diving" by Joi Veer I've thoroughly enjoyed listening to this CD. On Joi Veer's homepage, it mentions that Veer has taken inspiration from many classic singers and songwriters, such as Peter Gabriel, Graham Parker, U2, David Bowie, Elvis Costello, John Lennon, Petula Clark, James Taylor, Alanis Morissette, Goo Goo Dolls, Pearl Jam, Live, Soundgarden, Jeff Buckley, Dave Matthews and Coldplay. Listening to this CD, I can sense many undertones from these various artists. My favorite song on this CD? It'd have to be the first one, "We Are One". It's a highly addictive song, that repeats the above sentiment multiple times, with near-hypnotic results. Veer has teamed up with Armand John Petri, perhaps best known as the producer behind the Goo Goo Dolls, Six Pence None the Richer, and more, and Chuck Burgi, drummer for Hall & Oates, among others, also produces two songs. Veer's songs have also appeared on America's Most Wanted, the 2006 Winter Olympics, and more. His music has a great "beat" and the lyrics are really easy on the ears and easy to listen to. I suggest you head on over to Veer's webpage and listen to some of the tracks on "Pearl Diving", and perhaps even add it to your collection! Reviewed by Shaley Melchior, January 29, 2007 - For Immediate Release Reviews “ON” BY JOI VEER Weehawken, New Jersey resident Joi Veer can flat out write music. One of the best singer/songwriters to appear on the indie scene in recent years, Veer has given his fans a plethora of select original rock songs compiled in his newly released CD, ON. With songs written and performed in the style of top 40 rock, the musical style of Joi Veer will remind you of The Beatles and U2. However, there is not a hint of replication in the words, music or theme of these extremely well-written tunes. The themes of Veer’s songs are those of the human experiences, many of which are soulful tales of despair and angst fired with churning emotion. This kind of songwriter doesn’t come along too often. Written by Tom Yanno, for Musicians Realm, August, 2001. Joi Veer • ON • self-released • Strong on influence from U2, Peter Gabriel, John Lennon, and Pearl Jam, this debut album features a great array of inspired songwriting that is extremely fluid. Gentle guitars and soft percussion rhythms bubble softly underneath Veer's flawless vocals that do nothing short of taking flight. The subjects of his music are human experience, which he uses to render emotional ballads of honesty and conviction. THEGLOBALMUSE.COM Joi Veer presents a familiar style of pop/rock with a certain distinctiveness that is very refreshing. Joi's vocals give his music that distinctive quality that is very much enjoyable. The music is very well written, and contains attractive poppish hooks with a catchiness that many should fine very appealing. Much of the music on this album is radio friendly. Joi's approach to songwriting is one that keeps his music from being too complex, but contains enough substance to give the listener a reason to keep listening. Some may find it a little difficult to get use to the originality of Joi's vocals, but by the second or third song you'll be wondering where you heard this voice before. I'm still doing that. Joi's vocals give his music that special quality that makes this CD all the more worth while. This album is definitely a very good choice for those looking for pop with a different taste and something a little special. - Michael Allison - THEGLOBALMUSE.COM This New Jersey musician is one of the latest to hit the indie scene and has done so with force, thanks to his new album ON. His album is a beautiful album with well-constructed and wonderfully executed pop songs. "I Know What I Know" is a bouncy pop song with a definite rock edge that makes attractive to lovers of both genres. Other worthwhile songs on ON include "The Cruelest Fate"- (You barely catch your breath and once again you’re overcome/ You feel him close by- he’s life's greatest mystery). On the flipside, the harder rock sounds of "Toxic Love”’ and "Broken Toy" shows Veer’s musical versatility. - C.E. Pelc - SCORE! ROCKS - December 2001
