Kavi, meaning poet or songwriter in Tamil, first began her love of music at the age of 4. She recalls that one of her oldest memories is listening to her preschool teacher talking to her parents and saying that Kavi learns better with music than through any other process. And, like any budding songwriter, kavi spent a lot of her childhood listening to the radio and playing rhyming games with the songs which came on. Kavi spent her childhood learning Sangeetham, traditional Srilankan opera. She began lessons at the age of 4 in Srilanka, and continued learning, despite moving to Australia at the age of 8, until the age of 17. Kavi says Greenday's "When I come around" was the first song which jolted her out of her radio listening games and made her really start to pay attention to lyrics and start songwriting. After admitting to listening to that song like a million times, she wrote her first song at the age of 13. Although Kavi kept writing, she kept her dream of becoming a singer songwriter a secret from friends and family, until her second year of university. In 2002 she began djing, playing a number of university and private dance parties. Kavi states that she became a dj to learn how to make R&B "club joints". In 2005, literally the day after finishing her final law school exams, Kavi went into the studio to record her demo of 6 songs. Kavi says that the experience was a huge learning curve and one that finally affirmed her dream of wanting to be a singer. After recording her demo she supported "Rishi Rich Project" artist Dj Mak on the Australian leg of his tour, performing as the opener in both his Sydney and Melbourne show. On the songwriting front, in 2005 Kavi was invited to various songwriting retreats sponsored by Sony Music Australia and Peer Music Australia. 2006 was a huge year for Kavi. In April of 2006 Kavi's song "Wish" was chosen for review at the Pop Song Listening Panel at ASCAP's first Music Expo. "Wish" received rave reviews from all members of the esteemed songwriting panel. In September of 2006 Kavi performed at the first Srilanka Day celebrations at the Santa Monica 3rd Street Promenade to a crowd of 400 people. This was her first gig in the US and she says that the event "Was such a great opportunity, a great event with an awesome crowd". In November of 2006 kavi's song "U Got Me", written by her sister Karthi, was chosen as the first track on Westgrand Record's Music Heat Vol 1 compilation, with digital distribution throughout the US. 2007 is shaping up to be a great year for Kavi. Her music is now licensed to two Film and TV companies Jonesville Publishing and Noteborn Music. Kavi is working with Lee Lontoc from the Goodrich vocal academy on taking her voice to the next level, and the goal for this year she says is to both "perform more and write more". No doubt another exciting year lies ahead! To hear more songs by Kavi check out www.sonicbids.com/kavimusic To buy music by Kavi log on to www.mytracks.com/kavi
