She wasn’t your average 4-year old. I mean sure she played with other children and may have even been sent home to her Mother, Gayla Smith in Houston, TX with school notes…but the notes that Nakeitha “Nikki” Smith were associated with can be found on the music scale. In love with the stories in which music told, Nakeitha began singing in her Pennacostal church, while many children her age were simply playing with dolls. In fact, her passion for Gospel Music was her center focus until she reached the “audacious” age of 10. This was a magical time in Nakeitha’s life; this is when she truly fell in love with the microphone, as part of a Talent show for R.P. Harris Elementary school. The feeling and the connection with the audience was surreal, almost magical. She knew from this moment on that her life would be sung in the key of art, more importantly, the key of music. “Nikki’s” life only amped up from that moment on. In fact, she would continue singing, performing cover songs by various artists at any local talent show she could enter, in the Houston area. Perfecting her stage presence and falling deeper in love with each curtain call and close. At the age of 14, she sang her way into being a lead rhythm and blues recording artist with “Str8 Lace Records”; representing the label in various shows and events. By 1998, Ms. Smith was constantly evolving into a more assured and powerful performer; in fact she became the lead vocalist in girl group “Dezire IV”. This transitional opportunity encouraged many new methods to manage her career as a Singer. She really learned about her voice and how to harmonize and collaborate with other singers. Dezire IV was involved in a plethora of events in and around the Houston area; in fact by 1999 they were offered an opportunity to perform as an opening act for 1970's soul band “Confunction” who had hits such as "Love's Train." In 2000 the girl group’s music found its way into the hand of music mogul Teddy Riley, who loved the girl’s southern style and harmony. However, the group and the Mogul were unable to reach agreed terms. Nikki realized that perhaps her time and investment with the group had come to an end. Nakeitha, continued pressing on, perfecting her bold and infectious singing voice and presence. In fact, you can find her performing at many Houston-Open Mic establishments, weekly. Her goal is to continue to “pack the house” and remind people of what “feel good” R&B music is supposed to sound and feel like. In re-establishing herself as a Solo-Artist she began recording her debut album entitled “I’m Here”. Nakeitha believes that her purpose is to reach her audience in such a profound way that people will be able to feel every emotion attached to its corresponding note. She continues to perform from the soul, and take on new and exciting challenges, such as Acoustic Guitar playing. Listen out for Nakeitha “Nikki” Smith. She definitely has the authenticity that the Music industry has hungered for decades.
