Alabama the heart of Dixie, home of the red clay, birthplace of civil rights all these come to mind when thinking of Bama, but it is also the stomping ground of the next best trio of artist to hail from the south. They go by the name King Drive Boyz, yep that’s right King Drive Boyz from one of Birmingham’s western area neighborhoods Roosevelt City also known as “V-Town” or “Tha Velt.” The King Drive Boyz consist of three very different artist but, their unique styles complement one another’s to give them the sound of a great southern group in the making. Curt. -J (Curtis Jackson, 22) brings not only some slick southern rhymes, but also some soulful melody to the table, followed by member Fats-O’s (Nigel Henderson, 21) imagery filled bars, and concluded with Al Feezy Damn It Man’s (Alfonzo Bryant, 21) crunk and energetic flow. When these three distinct swaggers hit the track it brings a sound of a southern trio not yet heard in the mainstream music industry, its back-to-back action the track never dies down. Besides rapping and singing the group also can be seen doing some very eye popping dance moves when performing their song “Chopin” which is about a Birmingham dance called “Regulatin.” The history of the group goes back further than the members can remember; they have been friend’s fifth teen years or longer. They are all from Roosevelt City and grew up together on the same street King Drive, which is where they got the name for the group. King Drive Boyz, some times called KDB, began rapping when they developed a love for freestyle rapping in their early teens, when listening to some or their favorite rap artist like: Tupac, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Lil’ Wayne, TI, many of the Houston rappers, and several other artist. Originally, the group had four members, but the group’s youngest member Colin “C-Lo” Ponder died at seventeen for heart complications while playing his favorite sport basketball. It wasn’t until the death of their close friend that the remaining three guys decided to seriously pursue rapping in dedication of their late friend. The first time all three members recorded together as King Drive Boyz was in Curt. -J’s den recording a song in memory of C-Lo. After that they went on to record a few more tracks before running into the CEO of Mob Tied Records’ wife in the promotional van. At first they hesitated, but then they talked to her, she gave them the company’s business card, and they called the office and they began their quest a career in the hip hop world. While on affiliated with Mob Tied Records, King Drive Boyz put in lots of work in the studio recording tracks. Their newest work is the hot club banger “Dat Duke Dawg” and if in don’t know what a “duke” (Birmingham slang for the word butt) is KDB spells it out for you. With the hook repeating “she got dat duke dawg” and the back ground chanting “She got it! She got it!” KDB doesn’t only spend time in the lab they have also gained respect from their peers in the Birmingham rap movement and city locals from performing at various venues in the city such as: The Platinum of Birmingham, Club Continental, Club Ice, The L. R. Hall and Club Taboo to name a few. Known by their signature chant of King Drive Boyz quickly followed by a loud YEP gets the crowds attention as well as their never dull non-stop action packed show. All in all, the King Drive Boyz, bring a newfound sound of energy and life to the mic and through the sound waves, so until next time King Drive Boyz…YEP!
