About Manuel Monestel

San Pedro, Costa Rica

Manuel Monestel studied sociology and arts at the University of Costa Rica and popular culture and ethnomusicology at the State University of Bahia in Brazil.

For the last three decades he has developed a musical career as a songwriter and singer, leading several Costa Rican bands.

About one hundred songs composed and twelve phonograms recorded.
With his band Cantoamerica, with La Orquesta de la Papaya and as a soloist he has toured in the Americas, Africa, Europe and Asia.

Over twenty five articles in magazines and books published in Costa Rica and abroad about different topics related to music and music production.

For over twenty five years he has studied and performed calypso music from the province of Limón in Costa Rica, promoting it in the context of non afro descendant population.

He is an academic and a cultural leader and has occupied different charges as professor in the University of Costa Rica and the Distance University of Costa Rica and as as professor and head of cultural departments and projects for other institutions like The University for Peace, National Counsel of University Principals, the Associated Colleges of the Midwest and Cornell University.

His book “Ritmo Canción e Identidad” Una historia Sociocultural del Calypso Limonense was published in 2003 and got the prize of the book of the year by the IASPM (International Association for the Study of Popular Music).

He is writing a new book on Costa Rican popular music and he is also in the process of recording two new music albums.
