Some would say that Mikel Lander and Meridith Moore were meant to come together in this world to create music. Individually, Mikel Lander has a voice like Tom Waits and a guitar style that will take you back to the front porch pickin ways of the south . Meridith Moore sounds like something out of an old southern gospel church and has a voice and energetic stage presence that demands attention. Together, the two of them combine writing styles and lifestyles to create an innovative, fresh, new genre of Blues/Roots/Americana.When they met in 2006, Meridith was a new-comer to the Phoenix valley and was playing around town with Scotty Johnson of the Gin Blossoms . Mikel Lander, born and raised in the Arizona sun, had been playing the scene for years and took first place that year in the Arizona Blues Showdown. When their paths finally crossed, they were at a local party. A mutual friend grabbed the two of them and said “Meridith, meet my favorite guitar player. And Mikel, meet my favorite singer.” The two shook hands and Meridith immediately started soliciting Mikel to come play with her. She talked about creating something fresh and different in the music scene. Mikel, not a huge fan of female vocalists, paid her little attention, until he heard her sing. The rest is history. The two started writing and recording music together immediately and the response to their tunes was amazing. In late 2007, Mikel and Meridith began adding on to their repertoire. Evan Brown and David Libman joined on as their rhythm section. Shay later joined on Sax. Their new album, “The Soulo Sessions” is proof of how much talent and musical drive and dedication that these artists poses. As of now, this group of blues singing moonlighters are out five nights a week playing the local scene and turning fans on to a whole new style of music that the Phoenix valley has never experienced. In April, the group will be sharing a stage with Blues Traveler, The Wailers, Robert Randolph, and Government Mule. And it’s only the beginning.
