Though only four years in the game, Hip-Hop MC ProteJ is burning up the Kansas Hip-Hop scene with his lyrical skills. ProteJ developed his love of music through his parents. His father is a music veteran of over 30 years who began his career as a guitarist in his father’s garage. Though not world-renowned, he continues to perform and is considered a local hero in Manhattan, KS. His mother, on the other hand, is a talented dancer skilled in the art of Country, Swing and Ballroom dancing. ProteJ released The Hybrid Project, his debut, in July 2008. The album is a testament to his DIY-aesthetic. He produced the album with some help from his long-time friend and mentor LAST, who guided him in the early stages of his journey and appears in many songs on the album. Also, underground Midwest star producer Nezbeats (Archetype) who contributed recording time and his experience to a handful of tracks. Mic Marvel, an underground artist from the Southwest also gave some production assistance along with concept ideas. Childhood friend Big J, provided insight and inspiration to this project. Rising underground star Mr. Chazs, lends his vocal talent to a number of tracks as well. ProteJ takes the Hip-Hop sound and spins it on his head by mixing it with flashes of R&B, Rock and Soul throughout. Note the Indian sitar strings in “Shake That Body” and the melancholic piano opening of “Diamond In The Rough.” Careful listeners can hear influences from Jay-Z, Common, Tupac and KRS-one throughout. “I'm like you're next door neighbor that’s cool,” he explains, “and seems to be like a regular guy, but he's got his own style and swagger that’s just chill. The crazy thing is, he happens to rap and when you get to know him you see that hip hop is key in his life. It's real and it is just me.” ProteJ is also a published author and released his first book of poetry in March 2008. The Lost Puzzle Pieces by Jeremy L. Meek can be found at most major online retailers. ProteJ is currently working on his sophomore album Nothing Normal Here. -A&R Group-
