Skaliticians formed early in 2007 as just four guys jamming in a St. Paul basement space. The group made their debut performance on St. Patty’s Day later that year at Clandestino’s with a handful of originals and a slew of covers that included Reel Big Fish and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. The band slowly grew as the group began to find its collective groove. Sparked by the writing of lead vocalist Steve Sanders, drummer Jeff Bowback, and lead guitarist Eric Malagon, the band naturally blends a sound that mixes ska, funk, rock and reggae into a freight train of sound that just won’t stop. Vocalist Nicolas Sanchez provides a Spanish influx, smooth harmonies and on-stage antics. Matthew Inkala drives their steady bass grooves, while the horn section of Rob Kaszubowski, Brett Balsam and Jorge Astorga create the explosive sounds that bring their songs alive. Today, Skaliticians are the Twin Cities premiere bilingual ska band. There is only one word that can be used to describe this band: eclectic. This diverse group creates a melting pot of music that blends the old school sounds of The Specials & Fishbone with the newer beats and heavy horns of Spoon and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Their blend of culture and art creates an atmosphere that sings the praises of community pride and unity. In only 2 years they have played dozens of shows at over 16 venues around the Twin Cities which include the Fine Line, Hat Trick Lounge, 7th Street Entry, Stella’s Fish Café, and a live performance on KFAI radio in 2008. Their crowds and surrounding energy increase with each performance. One of their highlights include a special art experiment at La Bodega in Minneapolis, where artists were given a blank pallet to paint while the Skaliticians played in the background. The mix of music and imagery created a cultural masterpiece. Other highlights include multiple shows at the Fine Line, a special performance to celebrate the release of Omar’s magazine, and of course playing on Cinco de Mayo at the Red Sea Bar. Just as the lyrics from Sanders’ “No One Cares” says, “…to find what you have in common with others is wise…,” this group certainly has as it’s easy to see their chemistry on stage. Skaliticians are best known for their high energy performances, bilingual songs, and howling horn hooks that make their music irresistibly danceable.
