Sly Violet (Kawartha Lakes, ON) - After releasing two CDs, touring western Canada, hundreds of live performances and a number of radio appearances, Sly Violet has come a long way in a short time.
This husband and wife indie folk rock duo has been rockin their own musical trail for the past few years thru various venues, from festival stages, to pubs to coffee houses and cafes, they embrace them all with their passion for music. Sly Violet is Violet Clarke on vocals, guitar & harmonica and Sly Boston on drums. Their band name was created by joining together their first names, although it is also an evolution of Violet’s moniker from previous years - starting in 2001 she began performing solo gigs under the name SHy Violet which was also the title of her first album in 2004.
The duo recently received a Barrie New Music Award for Best Folk at the annual awards show in September. In March 2010 their song, Trees Dance was a Top 10 pick on OurStage.com. In 2007 Violet won the Kawartha Lakes Idol competition and went on to be a Top 100 finalist on Canadian Idol the same year.
They toured western Canada in fall 2009 and Violet did a solo acoustic tour across British Columbia in March 2010.
Their sophomore release, Feel Your Way Out (2009) has been played on multiple radio stations throughout southern Ontario and British Columbia. The sparse folk arrangements are built on acoustic guitar and her lovely harmonies, with ripples of piano and percussion sprinkled on top. It’s a wonderful blend of folk and acoustic soft rock.
Though Violet’s melancholy musings resemble Elliott Smith and Hayden, her voice has been compared to Joni Mitchell’s, her guitar style entrenches a touch of Dashboard Confessional and her pianist soul rivals Ben Folds.
Sly grew up in Sutton, Ontario while Violet is originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Stemming from a musical family, Violet studied classical piano from the age of 3 until she was 13 when she earned Grade 8 in Royal Conservatory and moved on to learn the guitar. At age 18 she began sneaking into bars just to perform at open mic nights and by the time she was 19 she had perfected over 100 cover songs and an armful of originals and started booking gigs in Hamilton, ON, under the name Shy Violet and she hasn’t stopped since.
They are currently based out of Kawartha Lakes, ON.
