“Agile stays the wind, and so it is with me,” Dave Styer says when thinking about his band, SPiNRaD, the 4-piece jazz/rock/jam group hailing from Northwest Arkansas. SPiNRaD began in April 2007, when Dave Styer and Jeff Repo, who had previously performed together, decided it was time to start something that represented their inspiration and unique character. Jeff Repo, born in Ontario, Canada, began playing drums at the age of 17. With influences such as Carter Beauford and Steve Jordan, Jeff quickly grew into an accomplished drummer. He moved to Arkansas in 2000 where he crossed paths with Dave Styer. Dave, who has played piano since the age of 3, is the vocal front man of the group. He began composing his own original music at 12, drawing inspiration from such legends as Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. While SPiNRaD was in the works, Austin Farnam, known in the area to be a very talented saxophonist, was mentioned within the local circles. After an invite by Dave and Jeff to a live jam, he started performing with the band fulltime. Austin, who first picked up a saxophone at age 11, is influenced by musicians such as LeRoi Moore, Charlie Parker and Jeff Coffin. Throughout 2009, Dave, Jeff, Austin and guest musician Rob Styer, formerly of Kingpin, played throughout Arkansas and Missouri while searching for a bassist. Sean King nailed his audition, bringing the tone and funk the band was looking for. Sean found his love of bass guitar at the age of 11 and draws inspiration from bass players such as Victor Wooten, Larry Graham, and Les Claypool. Performing over 100 shows in 2009, SPiNRaD’s debut album, Long Sleep the King, has sold over 700 copies regionally. Their current project, 'Life Returns' is expected for commercial release in fall 2010. With a piano-driven rock/jazz sound, SPiNRaD combines the influence of artists like Dave Matthews Band, Coldplay, and Herbie Hancock, and is primed and ambitious enough to make a lasting impact on the next generation of music.
