2008 and beyond (update)After playing over 70 shows in the 2007, STEEZ (creepfunk)kicked off 2008 with their first tour that had stops in Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Colorado, Missouri, and Oklahoma. The tour was a success and since then STEEZ has been making a name for themselves throughout the jam music scene. The spring of 2008 has been even more exciting for STEEZ. After coming up two votes short of an appearance at Wakarusa Music Festival, steez stormed back by beating out 10 bands and thus winning an appearance at MOE’s SummerCamp Festival (see our EPK for reviews from our Summercamp performance). Steez then survived 3 brutal rounds and was able to finish a remarkable 2nd place out of 16 of Southeastern Wisconsin best bands in a battle for a slot at the world’s largest music festival, “SUMMERFEST.” To quote the organizer of the battle (Tim Broderson), “the fact that a band from Madison was able to draw so well in Milwaukee is truly amazing, their fans are relentless and based on their sound, I can see why.” Coming up short was a disappointment, but they received write-ups in a couple Milwaukee papers, and also were interviewed on 88.9 and 102.1 out of Milwaukee which made it more than worth while. STEEZ then took the competitions to the internet where they took first and second place in the April 2008 OURSTAGE.com competition for the ROTHBURY music festival. STEEZ is hoping that these strong finishes will propel them into a slot at ROTHBURY which is a totally environmentally sustainable festival. STEEZ has always been very passionate about the environment which stems from their undergraduate studies at UW-Madison. They also continually play benefit shows to raise money and awareness for environmental issues. Bass player Chris Sell describes their passion for environmental issues, “Three years ago we organized our own Earth Day concert on the UW-Madison Campus and are proud that we have been able to do it 3 years in row! We recently have played benefits for environmental groups such as the Natural Heritage Land Trust, Sierra Club, WeConserve, and WISPIRG. These benefits have helped raise over 1000 dollars for these organizations. Coming up this Spring and Summer we plan to play Madison's Clean Lakes Festival and MTV's EcoParty.” STEEZ didn’t stop there, and with summer travels and future tours around the corner, STEEZ used band earnings to buy a BIO Diesel School bus which they plan to convert to run on veggie oil. Not only will the bus help save the planet, but it also helps spread the message of alternative fuels as they zig zag the country helping people forget their troubles through originial funk music. There’s a lot of things to like about STEEZ, but most of all, you will find their music a blast to dance too!!2006 BIOSteez (2003 - present) In the past 4 years, Steez has been one of the University of Wisconsin’s best kept secrets. In these 4 years, Steez has garnered a very devoted fanbase throughout the midwest- primarily through word of mouth. The versatility and uniqueness of their live shows, which often debut a few covers ranging from oldies, disco funk, classic rock, and even movie/tv scores, has led to the demand for the taping and distribution of their live shows. Steez, a five-piece, features Matt Williams on keyboards/synthesizers/accordian, Steve Neary on guitar and vocals, Rob Bessert on drums, Chris Sell on bass, and Andrzej Benkowski adds oboe, saxophone, violin, and vocals; all of which help to propel Steez into a genre of its own. Steez has a fresh sound which is hard to come by and has led the band to become the founders of their own genre of music that they have branded “Creepfunk”. Creepfunk cannot be defined; rather, it can only be understood through experience. Steez often has the ability to relate with their audience through their playful attack on pop culture. Steez has been building a strong relationship with many club owners across the midwest due to the many “steezburgers” that have relentlessly supported the band and have continued to shock clubowners with record setting alcohol sales. Steez completed their first EP, All Systems Bro, in the fall of 2005. The album received airplay throughout southern Wisconsin and has garnered very good reviews often encouraging the release of a full length album. Now that the members of Steez have all graduated from college they are preparing to take it to the next level and complete a national tour. If you use music for dancing, chilling out, or entertaining guests, Steez is the band for you.
