I grew up in Portola state park in the Santa Cruz mountains, and the neighboring town of La Honda. Did a tour in England with the Air Force for the GI bill, and to avoid the mess in Viet Nam. Married Pat, who had a son, Jon, a year after I got out of the service. Went to college at HSU studying Art, Architecture, English, Education and Math. Bought and refinished a house while in school, and sold it for enough to buy a 40 acre box canyon with a creek, and build one of the houses I designed in school. (still serves us well) Started a business as a designer builder, and ran it until it was eating too much of my time, then started a garden supply company so that I would have materials for landscaping around the house. Twenty years later this business was also eating all my time, so I sold it, and can now afford to be a musician. I started playing trombone in the 4th grade, switched to piano in the seventh, and picked up the guitar as a sophmore in high school. I have pounded rhythms on table tops and whatever else was at hand for as long as I can remember. My father was learning to play the guitar at the same time, and a group of folk and blues musicians out of San Francisco were hanging around the house giving us lessons and training us to stay up all night playing. While in England I wrote mostly poetry. The songs I came up with were blessfully lost somewhere along the years. After college most of my energy went into building and running the homestead and businessess. Then in 1994 I went to my first Strawberry Music Festival. (I have been every year since, and have worked for the festival for the past eleven years) That first year I was introduced to Greg Brown, Joel Mabus, Laura Love, Eric Thompson. Bella Fleck, Edgar, Douglas and Meyer, and a host of other musicians and writers that were playing stuff I could relate to. When I got home I couldn't shut my mind off. Have been writing and studying guitar, mandolin, bass and music theory every since. I have been a member of the California Coast Music Camp since the early 1990's. I have been to the Song School in Lyons Colorado three times, PSGW twice, and the Americana Song Academy in Sisters twice. Before I sold the Garden Supply business I built a recording studio, Trickle Creek Studios, and have recorded several CD's for singer songwriters. Some are from the hills around here, some come up from the bay area and spend a weekend at a time working on their CD. (Kind of a bed and studio, Just "friends" staying over to record.)
