Her mother says she was singing before she talked; that's probably true. Sylvana Joyce was writing songs on construction paper at the age of 4, and when her music school donated a piano to her at the age of 7, her penchant for composition blossomed. She debuted her first pop song, "Boca Raton" at her elementary school talent show shortly thereafter, and got the itch for sharing her music with others. Fast-forward to the present: Joyce has now quintupled her sound with ethnic percussion, fiddle, guitar and bass adding to the mix, and the result is a bippitty-boppitty vibe that makes it hard to listen without tapping, swaying and hopping to the beat. Joyce's sound is matched in talent by her fierce wit; her lyrics are the kind that linger long after the gig is up (which, she reminds us is entirely intentional): "...if you think you're well endowed / you might stick out well in the crowd / and who said that was not allowed? / nobody special..." Sylvana Joyce and the Moment keeps an audience on its heels; a must listen.
