Take To The Oars is a Rock band from Denver, CO. Ryan Gombeski (vocals, guitar) and Chris Weaver (drums) originally came together in 2005 and started writing and performing under the name Vonnegut. The band endured multiple line-up changes, but finally found stability with the additions of Mike Trujillo (guitar, vocals) and JP Manza (bass, vocals, accordion). Their debut EP, Fall Into Place (released March 2008), was recorded at Colorado Sound Studios and was produced and mixed by Manza and mastered by Brian “Big Bass” Gardner. In addition to winning Westword’s “Best Modern Rock Band in 2008 and being nominated again in 2009, Vonnegut shared the stage with Great Northern, Jeremy Enigk, Stars of Track and Field, and The Paper Route to name a few. In the spring of 2010, with a new album on the horizon showcasing a more broad and evolved sound, the band realized the previous moniker no longer accurately represented the music and the mission. Vonnegut officially changed in June of 2010 to “Take to the Oars” after the latin proverb, “if the wind will not serve, take to the oars.” In addition to another Westword Music nomination, a trip down to Austin during SXSW and playing shows with bands such as Local H and Fuel, Take to the Oars has spent much of 2010 in and out of the studio recording their debut album entitled “American Volume.” The album will be released on January 29th, 2011.
