It’s all over, Electric Slide-lovers; Macarena, move on over. Weddings will never be the same. Get ready for The Boom Boom Dance to take the dance scene by storm. Vine Records artists Chitlins are releasing their exciting interactive dance single this month to radio markets. Alternate mixes geared to the club scene will follow, along with video placement on MTV2, VH1, and youtube. The buzz-generating band is fronted by innovative New York-based artist Excite, a multi-talented player who draws upon both his rich musical history and dramatic acting chops to inject energetic creativity to the mesmerizing mix of The Boom Boom Dance. The band’s back story is thick with drama; think Hamlet, with a side of sibling rivalry and the highly charged emotions of an intensely talented family. For “Chitlins”, named for their soul roots, are a family band: Quintuplets, born 5 minutes apart. It all starts with New York born Excite, who accompanied his mother and his four brothers to church weekly throughout his childhood in Miami, soaking in a funk gospel influence from his earliest days. Upon moving back to New York as a young adult, he quickly landed parts in popular television mainstays like “Law & Order,” “New York Undercover,” and “Oz.” But his musical passions continued to percolate, and it wasn’t long before he connected with like-minded talents and Fat Nappa Productions was formed, ultimately turning out Nappa’s World, a project that sold internationally and led to college tours alongside artists like Black Rob, Fabolous, and Mims. Excite was the solo artist up front, the four brothers simmering quietly behind their more electrifying sibling as his back-up band. It was those associations that led to the fateful meeting with well-respected, gold record-scoring producer Lee Stone (Pharoahe Monch, Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, Method Man), and creative fusion occurred in the best possible way. The mighty twosome did well-received work for esteemed Blue Note Records with jazz great and Grammy nominated Ronny Jordan, thrilling crowds at BET Jazz fests across the country. As Excite continued to develop his own voice he eventually began to post his own material on Myspace, where the buzz quickly grew for the new artist with the irresistible groove. That buzz drew the attention of Vine Records president Mario Costabile, founder of New Jersey-based Vine Music Publishing, an influential new company whose catalogue spans the spectrum from Pop and Rock to R&B, Jazz and Latin to Gospel. Their 25 years of experience in video and audio production have amassed 23 Clio Awards to date, among numerous other commercial honors. Costabile brings his practiced skill-set to the video production of The Boom Boom Dance, and it shows in the film’s crystal-like clarity and rock-solid production values. It was this project that finally stirred the long-simmering yearnings of the overlooked brothers into confrontation and action, played out in their repeated phone calls to Excite throughout the video. Ironically, the one place the siblings successfully mesh is in the studio. Each brother speaks best on his own personal axe: Rufus on guitar, Rahloe on his bass, Cecil (“Big C”) on drums, and Murphy at the keyboards. Excite fronts the band forcefully on lead guitar and lead vocal. Maybe that’s where the fire started in their youth; either way, it’s still roaring fiercely today, and “Chitlins” are ready to take their place at the forefront of the dance scene. From the first playful moments of The Boom Boom video, viewers are drawn in by Excite’s engaging personality. The song’s enticing tempo makes it impossible to stay seated, a la James Brown himself. The urban groove and Excite’s soulful delivery kicks things into a 21st century feel, even as the bouncy lyrics reference popular dances of the past, including the Jerk, the Monkey, and even the Macaroni. It’s all good in The Boom Boom, and if you’re not up on your feet in the first 60 seconds, check for a heartbeat. Look for The Boom Boom to make its presence known in a big way in the months ahead at clubs, parties, and weddings, as its interactive element takes the country by storm. Contact your local radio and let them know it’s time to do The Boom Boom.
