On a brisk autumn day in the September of 1989, the world was introduced to Devon Bell, who would later be known as multi talented R&B sensation Devo D. Having been born in the Bronx during the 1990’s, Devo was subject to the struggle and hardship that plagued the area at the time. Like many of his peers Devo found comfort and solace in hip-hop music, for him it was music for the people, by the people. The witty word play and vivid detail of things he himself was just beginning to experience intrigued Devo and thus started him down the path of becoming an entertainer. As early as the third grade, Devo can remember sitting with a pen, a pad & a radio, jotting down any and everything racing through his young mind. It wasn’t until he joined his local church that Devo found his unique god given ability to sing. Early on singing fell to the back burner as he focused in on his talents as a rapper, but as time progressed he learned that, although soft and sweet, singing could be an equally effective tool, to tell the stories of his everyday struggle, as rap was. With influences from hip-hop, rock & roll and even gospel, Devo was able to create his own unique style that is hard to come by. Devo D. is the embodiment of the jagged style and lyricism of hip-hop, the attitude and volume of rock and roll, and the vocal ability of gospel all gelled together with the smoothness of R&B. Time only strengthened his passion for music and he soon found himself fully dedicated to pursuing a career in music as an R&B recording artist. He quickly evolved from a kid recording music in a makeshift booth in his closet to creating full length songs in the comfort of a fully equipped studio. He had also taken up vocal training, to further hone his talent, with none other than well renowned vocal trainer Craig Derry. The combination of these advances made in his career lead him to catch the attention of a buzzing rap group in New York named BXL. The two entities immediately clicked and began to make music together. In 2008, Devo D. was nominated for Best Male Vocalist for thaunderground.net. With momentum on his side Devo recorded and released his first solo project in 2010 entitled, R&BX: Rhythm & the Bronx. That’s when the unimaginable happened. One of the songs off of this project, Break, was played on Power 105.1 by none other than Jovonn “The Last Don”. A radio station that he grew up listening to & that housed some of his favorite music of all time had just spun one of his records. This taste of accomplishment in his passion sparked the flame of what now looks to be the story of his success. Since then, Devo has worked with buzzing artists such as Dynasty, Bruckup and the YoungFellaz as well as bigger named artists such as Memphis Bleek. He has also recorded at the famous Roc the Mic Studios owned by the iconic Jay-Z, and performed at venues such as Webster Hall, the Village Underground, the Times Square Arts Center and the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. At this pace Devo D. is surely headed down a path of great success in a field in which he is truly infatuated. His strong sense of individuality and all around unique style ensures that he is here and here to stay.
