The Sweet Peas are two girls from small towns who have found each other in the big city. While adapting, the two girls have established a fan base of country/folk lovers in the Toronto indie music scene. Although they may sport cute boots, plaid dresses and an uber shining stage presence, the girls are not all fun and games. No, their message is much deeper; they are telling stories while performing. Whether clear or abstract, through lyrical content they are talking about some of the issues relevant to the forgotten people, women’s rights, and inequalities in social justice.
How it all began. Violet Chepil has been performing solo since the age of twelve at venues including the Winnipeg Folk Festival Young performer stage. Caitlin Burgess has been a solo singer/songwriter for almost eight years, performing in and around Toronto venues including The Opera House, Holy Joe’s, The Cameron House, El Mocambo and more. She recorded and released a solo CD in June 2008, and started to look for a group to collaborate with at the beginning of 2009. While studying music at York University in Toronto, Violet one day posted to Craigslist looking for another female musician interested in song-writing, collaborating and experimenting with the idea of country music. Her response included the likes of Caitlin Burgess. An acoustic folk duo was immediately formed and the two have been an inseparable match ever since.
After many basement rehearsals, The Sweet Peas – the name chosen after the country flower and the canned food – took their music to the public. They have been performing everywhere and anywhere! Some of their accomplishments since their formation in February 2009 include the Red Roof Women’s Festival, The FAME movie premiere after-party at the Randolph Academy in Toronto, The Born To Play indie music day at The GAP, and performances at The Silver Dollar, Mitzi’s Sister, Czehoski, and many other Toronto venues. They aspire to share their music and message with their audience. This includes partaking in the country/folk music urban revival. Their lyrics are deep, their dresses are cute, and their musicianship and capabilities as vocalists and instrumentalists give them the tools they need to put on a show.
Simply put is always best. The girls of The Sweet Peas believe in writing and singing about what they know. This includes topics of love, friendship, cheating boyfriends, broken homes, single moms, unrequited love, war, poverty and loneliness. They believe that through their music they truly find a way to make a connection with their audience. They are only best at being themselves and for The Sweet Peas, they are just better together.
