Brought together by fate, trains and drunken promises, The Volunteers unique mixture of Funk, Soul and Rock reflect the remarkable circumstances from which this 7 piece group developed from. Front man Elan Mills first conjured up the idea of The Volunteers during the death throes of kiwi rock band Paselode for whom he was the front man for at the time. Realising that the rock and roll lifestyle had lead him astray he endeavoured to get back to his roots both musically and personally – thus the seed for The Volunteers was sown. After several chance encounters with fellow musicians a jam session in a small rehearsal room on the Kapiti Coast gave birth to The Volunteers - little did they know that they had just embarked on a remarkable journey. Quickly finding their groove The Volunteers combined their love of Funk, Soul and Rock n Roll into the ‘Vintage Rock’ that defines them. Building upon their musical strengths they started gigging locally and developed a theatrical show around their performance which grew to incorporate costumes and stage sets. Eventually The Volunteers set out to record their debut Album ‘Friends, Families and Fools’ as a tribute to those who had helped them begin their career. Completed in true indie fashion it was recorded in Island Bay, Wellington with a Friend of the bands and distributed by Universal Records. The singles ‘Just a Dream’ and ‘The Hound’ both achieved Radio air play nationally and were featured on C4 and Juice with ‘The Hound’ seeing 6000 hits on Youtube in it’s first week. Now with a new manager on board the map has been drawn for the future, with a new single in production for release mid 2010 you can expect big things from The Volunteers in the future.
