joni allen was born in Berkley, California and named after Joni Mitchell. She grew up running naked through the trees and collecting arrowheads in the creeks of Northern California. Her songs are narrative ballads based on stories from her own life and people she's met along the way. After memorable leading roles in musicals such as Evita, joni graduated from Cal Arts, and began her career as an actress in Hollywood. She soon relocated to New York with a 4 year contract role on an ABC Soap. For the past decade, joni has toured around the US as a kirtan walla, often with her longtime friend Dave Stringer, well known for his original songs in Sanskrit, an ancient language held sacred in India. In an effort to make up for lost time with Vietnam Vet “Bio-Dad,” joni moved to Tennessee with a suitcase and a hundred dollar bill. While barhopping in Nashville she found herself within a small circle of songwriters, which included some of the best storytelling musicians of our time. Collaborations in such company inspired the realization of her own unique voice. joni's musical style is an eclectic hybrid of folk and Americana, reflecting her personal experiences of life and love authentically and at times too honestly for comfort. joni has written, and performed her songs over the years honing her skills as a singer-songwriter, and is currently recording songs from the shelves, for her debut CD: 'Some Horses,' produced by David Sutton (bass player with Lucinda Williams).
