Treelines was formed in the summer of 2008 in Kelowna BC, a city that time and time again proves to be a spawning ground for musical talent; and these boys are certainly living up to that reputation. Treelines is the result of friends coming together from a wide range of different musical backgrounds, with the same goal in mind: to have a great time creating and playing the music they love. Their music can be described as an unassuming brand of indie rock, often painting a lyrical picture of anything from the old west, to wintry northern landscapes. There’s a quality about this band that can only seem to be described as sounding nostalgic and ‘unintentionally Canadian‘; something you can’t really pinpoint. While delivering everything from soft heartfelt ballads, to swooning rock tunes, to fist pumping anthems, the varied songs still maintain an unmistakable sound. Comparisons to Canadian rock legends Sloan and The Weakerthans have surfaced, along with allusions to contemporary indie rock pythons Kings of Leon, Okkervil River and lingering references to Death Cab For Cutie; a reference the band cannot understand or seem to shake. In July 2009, the boys released their debut album; a self titled full length that showcases the song writing of singer Matt Lockhart. Since the release, the album has charted in the top 10 at a number of college radio stations across BC, CFUV in Victoria and CFBX in Kamloops to name a couple. Treelines has also been featured in the ‘Hot Artist’ section of the indie-rock channel on ourstage.com, a fan-voting internet music site, and has had select songs included in various CBC Radio podcasts. In January their song ‘Canadian Airlines’ was chosen out of an astonishing ninety-something thousand tracks as CBC Radio 3’s “Song of the Day,” and promoted the reviewer to quip that the song “says more about [Canada] in three mere minutes than a three-hour Throne Speech could.” Now equipped with a permanent line-up, the band is recording an EP consisting of six brand new songs that will be released at some as-of-yet undetermined time in the spring. This release promises to be a more well rounded, polished, and cohesive effort, due to the collaborative approach with which these songs were written. If you haven’t heard this band yet, make sure to give their album a shot; you’ll be happy you did. Their songs all seem to possess a nostalgic quality that is so inviting that after a few listens you‘ll be singing along and reminiscing like the lyrics were taken from your high school diary.
