Troublesum is Reggae music’s triple threat: Singer, Songwriter and Producer. His powerful lyrics, versatile music, energetic shows and handsome looks make him an irresistible package. He captivates the hearts and attention of audiences the minute he steps on the stage. Troublesum (Devon Smith) was born in the parish of Hanover, Jamaica W.I. By the age of six, he was already singing songs being played on the local radio. He was inspired at a very early age by some of reggae music's greatest talents such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Shabba Ranks, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Shaggy, Sean Paul, Capleton, and Sizzla; also R&B great Michael Jackson, and Hip-Hop legends Jay-Z and Nas. Trouble’s music is a diverse blend of his Caribbean and American musical influences. The heart of the music is Reggae but it also has elements of Hip-Hop, R&B, Calypso, and Rock. Family hardships caused his family to move from Jamaica to the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, New York. Being the new kid on the block, trouble always seemed to find him. As a result of his rebellious behavior, he was looked down upon as a problem child and given the nickname, "Trouble." The word "Sum" was later added to his name as an indication of value, future success, and high accolades. It was in these times of his greatest despair that music became the essence and source of his inspiration. Trouble’s older cousin Lloyd D. Stiff, a reggae artist signed with Legendary Records, decided to take the young artist under his wing in an attempt to keep him out of trouble and away from the streets. “He was my first influence. I was just amazed how he could put words together in the studio. I started writing my own lyrics at age 12.” Troublesum put himself back on track with his life’s direction, excelled in school and enrolled at Stony Brook University. In college, he and some friends formed a talent-based organization known as The Coalition. The organization is comprised of many different talents such as singers, dancers, rappers, poets, etc. The purpose of the organization is to spread unity through the use of music. “I've always created songs and would perform for close friends and relatives for over a decade. But I was always a shy person so I never saw myself going on stage and performing in front of an audience of strangers. That all changed when I was pressured by a friend to participate in our Stony Brook University talent show. From the tremendous response I received, I knew I was ready to be professional performer.” He dominated the college circuit and developed a huge fan following as a result of his heart stopping performances. Troublesum graduated from Stony Brook University with honors earning a BA in Economics and a BS in Business. Shortly after joining the workforce, he came to the conclusion that working for someone else and sitting in front of a computer was definitely not what he was destined to do. He could no longer ignore his calling. Troublesum stepped up and took control of his career by producing and promoting his album independently. He worked together diligently putting together his debut self-titled album, “Troublesum.” The album sold over 4,000 copies without major distribution or marketing. This sparked red hot performances throughout the United States and the Caribbean in the following years. You may have seen him ripping stages and audiences alike with his stellar performances in New York City at the legendary Club Exit, Club Speed, and The Lion's Den; Jamaica’s Hedonism 2, Jamaica Tamboo, Jungle Night Club, Pier One, and Risky Business. He has opened for artists such as: Vybz Kartel, Sanchez, Cam'ron, Dipset, The Clipse, Lumidee, Rah Digga, Jae Millz and MTV’s Making Da Band. Currently Troublesum is hard at work crafting his new masterpiece album. From collaborations with King Tutch, Rugged, Heavy D, and Foxy Brown, it is destined to shake up the reggae and urban music scene. It is loaded with diverse big tunes such as the certified club bangers “Touch” and “So Sexy”, the social-conscious “Through The Storm” to the romantic “I Want To Make Love.” In addition to musical talents, Troublesum is also a creative force by establishing his own clothing line, Deus Beni. As a shining example for recording artists, Troublesum has realized his potential and is working hard to take advantage of his God-given talents. With an ambition and drive unparalleled by any artist on the market, his unique blend of performing, singing, business-savvy, and life experiences adds up to one powerful thing - Troublesum is destined to wreak havoc and cause trouble throughout the Entertainment Industry. “I plan to continue to making good music, giving back to the community, and keep working hard 'til I reach the top.”
