Artist. Poet. Teacher. Who is Twenty 20? Twenty 20 is an underground Charlotte MC who has been putting it down on the mic for twelve years. A transplant to the city of Charlotte, Twenty 20 moved to the Queen City in 1996. Originally from Long Beach, California Twenty began rapping seriously during his time attending West Charlotte High from 1996-1998. “ I never wanted to move to Charlotte, but situations and being young and dumb led me here. Now I don’t want to go anywhere. This is my home,” says Twenty when thinking of the circumstances that led him down this path. Since becoming the “Beatties Ford Prodigy” Twenty has performed at many events including West Fest, The annual Junetenth Celebration, and Survival of the illest competition at UNC Charlotte, and the Mid Atlantic Music conference. His hunger for competition has led him to a freestyle record of 98-5. While in attendance at Johnson C. Smith University Twenty created a Hip Hop showcase in memory of a fallen friend and MC Gary “FATS” Hopkins. During Twenty’s rhyme career he has been apart of 3 groups (Philisophical, Coalition, and The Greata), dropped 4 mix tapes (Come Together, Taxes Debt and Trouble, Band of the Hand, I got that Chicken) and his only solo album Soundtrack for the Everyman, which sold 3500 copies on the streets and still is a local underground classic. Currently Twenty is preparing to release his next album Hindsight that will be produced by his long time collaborating producer Danger. When asked how he feels about the current climate of the rap game Twenty laments, “ All I know is how to create art from my reality. Today there seems to be too much fiction and fact blurring the lines of art. Also the music lacks substance, I miss substance and the sad thing is there is substance out there you just gotta know where to find it at”. Right now the path that Twenty 20 walks is undetermined. Will he ever reach his shine as a superstar rap artist or will all the talent go unnoticed? Every song by Twenty exhibits energy never before seen in hip-hop. His on stage persona is captivating and the song concepts are thought provoking and enjoyable. Will this be enough for this great artist to finally paint his masterpiece on the canvas of pop culture? When asked this question Twenty replies “ I know I got talent. God gave me this gift and it has led me into the hearts and souls of many people. Maybe I’m just destined to be that urban legend. That sucks but it won’t stop me from putting out my thoughts and pains. The game needs me whether it knows it or not” With that said maybe one day you’ll come across a show or pick up a mix tape or hear a song with Twenty 20 on it. Maybe you might catch a glimpse of what a MC should be. Maybe you’ll ask the question Twenty has heard for years “Why you ain’t signed yet?” Maybe, just maybe, you’ll support something real.
