“It all started in a loft, in our hometown of Santa Ana, where we were brought together through friendship.” – Canvas Delicate harmonies and multi-instrumentalists is what you can expect from Santa Ana-based band CANVAS. Wiping the slate clean and starting fresh after a lineup change, the four-piece are enhancing their music capabilities by each member switching up instruments throughout their live set. Originally founded by former Orange County High School of the Arts students Doll Knight, Keila Morris, and long time friend George Bernal, CANVAS now consists of Knight (vocals and keys), Morris (vocals and keys), Bernal (bass, drums, guitar and vocals) Michelle “Piper” Rosabal (keys, bass, guitar and vocals) Justin Deckert (bass, vocals) and Gustavo Peraza (drums). A couple years ago while working on other projects individually, the band was given the opportunity to perform for a local art show. The scheduled band for the evening never showed, so the future members of what would later become CANVAS filled in and surprised the audience. Realizing how much they had in common musically, Knight, Morris, and Bernal began writing together. Within a week they had completed twenty songs. “Bite Out Of The Sun was the first song we wrote together and from there, we couldn’t stop,” recalls Morris. The band is best known for their genuine lyrics, beautiful harmonies by Morris and Knight and the interchanging of instruments. CANVAS doesn't belong in just one genre. They blend sounds from folk, pop and rock, and bring in acoustic elements. Inspired by a variety of artists from the soulful John Mayer to the harmony-oriented style of The Dears and Indigo Girls, CANVAS can be found at a loft, known for its boutique The Lucky Owl, in Santa Ana where they practice and actually put on local shows with other Orange County bands the first Friday of the month. This year, the band participated in the OC Music Awards Best Acoustic Showcase. Also, CANVAS played at the 2009 Orange County Fair and they frequently play at The District at Tustin Legacy. Now, they are heading back into the studio to record new music, which you can get a sneak peak of at one of their live shows. "Santa Ana-based indie rock quartet Canvas turned in a memorable performance marked by fresh material and maximum verve January 29 at the District at Tustin Legacy." - OC Weekly "Canvas closed out the evening with an upbeat performance that embodied the exciting vibe of the night." - OCMusicAwards.com "One buzzing new track is "Holes In The Sky." It may be just a few keys on the piano and strumming of an acoustic guitar, but the catchy chorus and floating "oooooos" make for a well-blended, simply irresistible sound." - Ashley Eliot , Everyday Noise
