Young Neat: Producer, Singer, Writer, Emcee, Visual Artist. What can we say Music is in her blood, starting with her father who lived in Ohio with Eddie Levert and was the touring drummer for the Legendary R&B trio The Ojay’s in the mid to late 1970’s. He later branched off to start up bands in Canada and New Jersey while her uncle performed with Jazz great Sarah Vaughan. Music has always been a family thing; Her Mother recalls her stealing the show as a baby while her father was working on a Home Recording she cried in different octaves along with the music letting everyone know she wanted to take part in the song. The name Young Neat stems from her Great-Grandfather shortening her given name Annita to Neat and it stuck as a nickname. Young comes from her always wanting to hang with older kids in the neighborhood. They were taken aback by her ability to sing and freestyle, so they allowed her to tag along calling her Young Neat. A stand out memory she say’s “My parents knew I wanted music for myself so, every Christmas along with the typical toys I wanted; I would always get a new instrument or karaoke machine to channel my musical energy. In 2002 she was first featured on rapper Diverse debut album “My Time Is Now”. In 2003 tapping back into her Rap past she began competing in Rap battles where she gained notoriety, because she won all except two leading to her to be featured in the 2004 MTV freestyle battles that included a segment on MTV’s Direct Effect. Unsatisfied with just being a feature on other people’s projects her album Love &Hood was released in the summer of 2005 produced and engineered by Sony Recording Artist Aleksandar Da Great. After the release of her album she was introduced to Music Executives who wanted to put her into a girl group and change her style and personality. Unwilling to sell her soul for fame at that moment she saw that she wanted to distant herself from the same industry that she tried so hard to reach. Taking her career into her own hands she started investing in studio equipment to gain Independence from the whole scene which stunted her creative growth. Shortly, after that she started studying voice with Grammy Award winning Jazz Recording Artist Judi Silvano, who helped her find her true self in the music. In 2006 Young Neat was listed as one of Cosmo Girl Magazine’s top 10 Independent female song-writers where she was the only African American included. That same year she had an Epiphany after performing at the Legendary Nuyorican Poet’s Café stating, “I received so much love from that audience, because they could tell I loved what I was doing they embraced my art and inspired me to create purely from my heart. She started taking Music Production serious, because of her late fathers skill with percussion instruments she say’s, “He would sit me on his lap and let me play the drums and be surprised, by the fact that I was so little and kept a beat”. This led to her being featured in VH1’s The Score an online exhibit for upcoming producers. The current state of music for Young Neat consists of her releasing her second LP “Diary of Rebels” slated for a 2009 release. The album represents any one who understands the trap of mainstream media and any one who is brave enough to rebel against it. It also, represents true freedom and creativity without the constraints of trying to be radio friendly. The possibilities are endless, because she continues to stay true to her art and all of the people who support it.
