The Brian Bateman Blend

Inspired by a pair of depression era cowboy guitars – the weathered instruments sang the first notes of a song that became “Wedding Gown” — #1 Country and Folk in Boise on ReverbNation summer 2010 — providing Bateman with an intriguing musical path he recognized as an otherworldly calling.

Words and phrases swirled in Bateman’s head – resulting in a collection of colorful images married to undeniably familiar scenarios. They are the epitome of true love songs. Heartbreaking. Ironic. Comedic. Poignant poetry. Sounds for the perpetually broken hearted – taking aim at love’s repeat offenders.

The Brian Bateman Blend began as a three-piece in the summer of 2010. The group features Brian Paul Bateman (vocals and acoustic guitars), Trevor Arana (drums and percussion), and Matt Sisco (bass) and Gary Glaesemann (lead guitar).

In January 2012, “Break The Chain” – an autobiographical anthem for self-empowerment – hit the #1 spot in Alternative Country on Ourstage.com (an MTV partner).

Shows to date have included several benefit concerts for the Treasure Valley Chapter of the Autism Society, Two performances at United Vision for Idaho’s Liquid Forum, standing room only performances at The Fixx Coffeehouse, fundraisers for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the American Red Cross, Advocates Against Family Violence, and local Kiwanis chapters. Additionally, the band hit high marks at the 2011 Boise Music Festival and the 2011 Canyon County Music Festival. In August 2011, The Blend headlined Boise’s Knitting Factory Concert House and have been asked to return several times supporting national touring acts such as Alpha Rev, Mickey and the Motorcars, and JJ Grey and Mofro.

The debut CD from The Brian Bateman Blend arrived July of 2011 to the praises of Idaho Statesman entertainment editor Michael Deeds. “Beneath the surface, there’s an intensity about the group’s pop-rock storytelling, dominated by Bateman’s forceful vocal calisthenics.”

Influenced by every type of music imaginable, and with players who cite Johnny Cash, Rush, Brandi Carlile, The Smiths, Elvis Presley, k.d. lang, Todd Snider, and KISS as iconic heroes, The Brian Bateman Blend are a melting pot of rock, country, alternative, pop, soul, blues, and rockabilly. The blending of many styles creates a unique sound among today’s popular offerings. The music is in a category all to itself… It’s simply Blend.

Bateman: Singer, Songwriter, Musician, Activist by Jerry Nelson -- Huffington Post
Each year there are many musicians that speak out for their favorite cause. There's even a few -- think Willie Nelson -- who demonstrates their commitment with time and money. Every so often a musician comes along who blurs the line between musician and activist. Their songs, their stories, their very lives are made up of the essence of the fight for justice that seems to consume every waking hour. One songwriter who has his feet planted in the musical world as well as the social change world is Brian Bateman of Boise, Idaho. Brian grew up in a village in southern Idaho and began writing songs that best expressed what was in his heart. After years of touring the northwest, Brian recorded his first album in 2002. The album, White Lie, is one of the most downloaded albums on the Internet and Bateman was recognized by Billboard Hits of the Web for this accomplishment. What makes this an "over-the-top" accomplishment is that Bateman was not signed with a label when he won this recognition! The first single on the album "Save Me" charted in the Top 40. White Lie was recorded by studio engineer Guy Charbonneau recognized for his trailblazing mobile recording and was a feature on KLOS in Los Angeles. Returning to Idaho after several years of promoting White Lie, Bateman refocused. Missing key ingredients while living life on the road; he realized the importance of family and community. Leaving the illusion of glamour of the road life behind, Bateman picked up his battered acoustic and began traveling the Pacific Northwest as a solo act. His goal this time was not to promote an album, but rather to raise money and awareness for varied causes. The boy from a village in southern Idaho had found his mission through helping others. Every so often in life there are serendipitous moments when people, places and things cross our paths and we find ourselves on a journey of a new direction. This is where Adrienne Evans comes in. Evans, Executive Director of "United Vision for Idaho" and Bateman formed a partnership. Evans produced a CD called Progressive Voices and Bateman contributed a song of personal activism titled "Break the Chain." The release of the album was celebrated with a string of events throughout downtown Boise. The events collectively known as The Community Progressive featured Bateman and his new band, The Brian Bateman Blend. The band played two concerts at the all day event, strengthening their demonstrated commitment to empowering the community they call home. One of Bateman's long-standing traditions is to donate most of the proceeds from performances to organizations such as The Autism Society, The Susan G. Komen Foundation, Advocates Against Family Violence, Disabled American Veterans, and many local charities. Brian proudly supports United Vision for Idaho and United Action for Idaho. His goal is to spend each day trying to make the world a better place through music. Bateman is well on his way to achieving that ambition.

THE BRIAN BATEMAN BLEND The Brian Bateman Blend With tales of family alcoholism and ugly breakups, the Brian Bateman Blend doesn’t gloss over the pain of the world. Beneath the surface, there’s an intensity about the group’s pop-rock storytelling, dominated by Bateman’s forceful vocal calisthenics. On the hard-charging "Abandon," it feels a little bit like the band can't keep up with Bateman's suffering. The tone softens as the group dabbles in various influences (hence, the “Blend.”) Those range from Johnny Cash-style country to blues and beyond. “Brand New Future Ex” sounds like a lost Junior Brown tune. Is “personal goth” a genre? It might be if you count the subject matter of haunting, piano-fueled “The Dark,” the album’s most affecting, impressive track.
