CONYERS -- When John Scott sought someone to give voice to the songs he was writing, it turns out he didn't have to look very far. #A working musician in the Atlanta area for some 25 years, Scott said when his sister-in-law Cindy Sauer shared a hidden talent for singing some eight years ago, he was ready to build an entire band around her. #"We were at a family reunion at Stone Mountain Park and I was sitting at a picnic table with my 12-string guitar, and I started playing 'Every Breath You Take' by the Police," Scott said. "And I said, 'Does anybody know the words to this song?' Cindy said she did, and this incredible country version of 'Every Breath You Take' came out of her mouth. #"I said, 'Wow!' I'd never heard her sing and she'd never sang in public, but I knew this was the real deal. So I took her to an open mic night at the Celtic Tavern and she won first place. That's what got us started. #Scott and Sauer now front the Heart N Soul Band, which has a regular monthly date at the Celtic Tavern (the first Friday of the month), gigs throughout the metro Atlanta area and plans to make it big in show business. #"Cindy just has a knack -- she can almost read my mind about songs," Scott said. "There's a connection there. No singer has ever gotten it like she has with my songs. She can sing any song you throw at her. I felt that was a sign we should do something with it. #Along with lead guitarist Tommy Williamson, bassist John Joseph and drummer Eddie Taylor, Scott and Sauer have hopes that 2011 will be a breakthrough year for the group, which has a definite country tinge but can also toss rock, blues and jazz colors into its eclectic mix of original songs and covers. #"We don't intend to be a bar band forever," Scott, who lives in Rockdale County with his wife Deena, said. "We're going for the big time. We will do whatever it takes to get big and get Cindy a recording contract. We're going for it all out this year and we won't quit until it happens. #"There are plenty of folks out there with talent but so many of them give up if something big doesn't happen in two or three years. The key is perseverance. It could happen this year, but I know it will happen or we'll die trying. #Two years ago, Scott and Sauer had an opportunity to travel to Nashville to record some of Scott's compositions for a publisher, but tragedy struck when Sauer's husband Jim committed suicide. #The two decided to carry on and Scott's song "This Cold Desire" detailed the sorrowful situation. Scott said the song is dedicated to Jim Sauer and agencies dedicated to suicide prevention. (Click link below for rest of the article.)
