When I first listened to the spectacular Memory Tapes track, Today Is Our Life, I didn’t expect that it could be used as a hip-hop beat. Philadelphia native who goes by the name Trademark Experience somehow turned the song into an awesome background to lay down his lyrics. As a lyricist, Trademark is dealing with a tale that most young artists can relate to as he rhymes about his struggle just getting known in the music industry. The subject matter definitely isn’t what’s going to impress most people but his impressive producing skills remixing Memory Tapes song into a suitable beat to rap over. Trademark is a very fresh-faced rapper so I suspect his lyrics will only grow as he builds more of a fan-base. If you liked the track check out his WEBSITE and FACEBOOK PAGE.

Speaking of passing tests, this video from Philly’s The Trademark Experience, made to encourage Philly kids to do well on the (funding imperative) PSSA exams, touches all the right places on its way to parodying Fabulous’ “You Be Killin’ Em” [via Philebrity]. Aw.

That would be Philly’s own The Trademark Experience above, espousing the glories of preparing for, and then taking the PSSA, a standardized test the state uses so they can figure out whether or not your school is full of morons. As an enticement to get kids to prep for the test, the School District somehow wound up partnering with Trademark, who did the track and video. The song is called “Fill It In,” and it is a parody of Fabolous’ “You Be Killin’ Em.” “The song/video has gotten a great response thus far,” he told us. “It is being used in classrooms & PSSA pep rallies all across Philadelphia and the Philly burbs, it is being aired in heavy rotation on PSTV 52 (the School District’s cable channel), and it was recently picked up by a few DJs at Wired 96.5.”

These might be my biases talking, but every once in a while I find myself getting a little frustrated by hip-hop’s general refusal to stay on top of new musical innovations and trends. On one end you have mainstream hip-hop which hasn’t done much since Timbaland’s heydey (let me guess, dubstep is next / reappropriation of old styles as ‘fresh’) / on the other end, you get backpackers who take a conservative/reactionary approach by lionizing the early 90s and not doing much else... So people like The TradeMark Experience, from Philadelphia, are who we should be paying attention to: up-and-comers who aren’t afraid to use more current stuff like chillwave (to the extent that Memory Tapes is chillwave!) within the context of hip-hop.

Not your average sounding mixtape, The Trade Mark Experience seeks to lay a new foundation in your thoughts about this style of music. Creating a blend with hip hop, rap, and dance music. I really enjoy this music, so this whole mixtape is on the radio station. He's worked hard to keep his production on point. This is definitely a creation worth paying attention to. Watch for his work on upcoming tracks on Bankrupt Business mixtapes. In my humble opinion he's re-defining the industry. @DJBANKRUPT

I will say this is rather brilliant. The TradeMark Experience is a one-man show, based in Philadelphia, in which, among various brand new tracks, some amazing samples are thrown in, to create a brand-new take on some older hits, It's kinda hard to explain, but should become clearer after you have a quick look over at his official MySpace... Jumping between pop, dance, r'n'b, hip-hop, rap, it's a brilliant set, with some huge tracks sampled, read on for my thoughts.
