Diverse. Dynamic. Contemporary. These words not only describe San Antonio, TX - based quartet the Conflict, but also the south Texas city that it calls home. Just as San Antonio continues to modernize while clinging to its historical roots, so does the Conflict strive to establish a decidedly modern rock sound while maintaining a fondness for classic pop sensibilities. Together for just under a year, the Conflict has quickly become a fixture on the local club circuit due in large part to their tight, sweaty live performances. Energetic drumming, engaging harmonies, cutting bass melodies, and fiery blues-based guitar solos are all elements that a lesser band would be happy to have just one of. To the Conflict, each element is simply another weapon in the arsenal.
The Conflict is made up of vocalist/guitarist Javier Padilla, guitarist and background vocalist David Neff, drummer Mark Gray, and bassist Jas Sawyer. Influenced by rock giants such as the Beatles, the Clash, and Tom Petty - and equally so by more modern-day rockers Foo Fighters, Green Day, and Jimmy Eat World - the Conflict worships in the church of its idols without ever groveling at the altar. Each of the songs on the independently released debut full-length album Freeway Songs - from the opening breath of "Midnight Blues," to the height of the guitar solo in "Belladonna," to the final cello chord on the album-closing acoustic ballad, "The World Will Knock You Down," - demonstrates this band's versatility and musicianship.
Initially a home studio project spearheaded by songwriter Padilla, his then-roommate Neff, and his high-school friend Sawyer, the Conflict has had quite a year since former drum line captain Gray settled in behind the kit. Highlights include a successful photo shoot with Alternative Press-published photographer Matthew Alvarado; a slot opening an acoustic show for Kris Roe of The Ataris; an interview with San Antonio newsweekly 210SA; shows with signed and touring acts such as A Heartwell Ending, Ivoryline, The Dollyrots, and Vallejo; and, of course, the recording and release of their debut album, Freeway Songs.
Highly talented and even more motivated, San Antonio's the Conflict is determined to become established as more than what has become the prototypical rock band. The Conflict is a young, smart American rock band, capable of achieving great successes in the months and years soon to come – and the depth of musical influence and diversity of sound found on their debut album, Freeway Songs, reflects that.
