Description

"Highway Honeymoon," written by Good Luck Penny's Doug Pierce, JB Felton, and Lindsey Guillot, is the story of how guitarist and singer Pierce's parents were married. He was 25. She was 17. And they eloped in the early 1960's. As though the two were already living in a country song, the father of the bride even showed up at their door with a shotgun. The track was recorded in Nashville's renowned Blackbird Studio, with the help of producer Brandon Goff and some of Nashville's finest musicians.

Lyrics

They ain't got no wedding pictures Didn't have that kind of time Her daddy was hot as the December embers in the home she left behind He took her hand faster than the shells in her daddy's old shot gun Said their vows at the old court house It was the winter of ‘61 Nine hundred 2-lane miles before them A new job in two days A couple a bags was all that they had Tossed into a ford fairlane Now sometimes love won't make it easy or safe but just makes sense He dropped it in drive and looked at his bride And said, "Let the honeymoon begin" So they danced at the rest stop in Putnam County Where he made a dandelion bouquet Toasted the road with an RC cola And the cut a Moonpie wedding cake Through a good luck penny in the Mississippi Sun goin down in their rear view Truck stop diners drive all nighters On their highway honeymoon Took their time till they hit Missouri Made it up on old Route 9 Made Saint Lu' by half past noon And made love by the half moon light Now they didn't know at the time what they were doing But 9 months down the road They felt the joy of a baby boy that they made on the long road home So he sang the best of Elvis Presley And she played the dashboard drums off beat A kiss on the right cheek every time she Thought that he might fall asleep They dined at a roadside Farmers Market By then they were running on fumes They pulled to the side and turned out the light On their highway honeymoon So they danced at the rest stop in Putnam County Where he made a dandelion bouquet Toasted the road with an RC cola And the cut a Moonpie wedding cake Through a good luck penny in the Mississippi Sun goin down in their rear view Truck stop diners drive all nighters On their highway honeymoon
