Description

In 1675, the Bedlam Asylum became a tourist attraction , when it opened its doors to the general public, allowing them to gaze at the people held therein (for a few pence, of course). On occasion the non-dangerous inmates of the Abraham Ward were allowed out into the streets to beg for alms. With this knowledge, it was common for other poor and desperate beggars to act and dress as if they, too, were inmates! It makes the things that we do for money seem, well, not so bad.

Lyrics

The flagstones gleam, The lamplights flicker A madman seems, To dance and snicker Down the alleys, And through the streets Float his pleas, And his grief You get in it, to get out of it Its all the same, its all the same You fed in it, you bleed out of it From the vein, the vain You get in it, to get out of it Its all the same, its all the same You fed in it, you bleed out of it From the vein, the vain The Professor and The Madman speak in notes Oxford bound, London post You get in it, to get out of it Its all the same, its all the same You bled in it, you feed out of it From the vein, the vain The Beldam of Bedlam casts her bones Locked in her cell all alone Skin and bones With down turned eyes, He starts to rant Those who see his lies, Have no cent to grant Disheveled robes, Tin cup in hand The poor man knows, How to sham Abraham Its all the same, its all the same From the vein, the vain Its all the same, its all the same From the vein, the vain
