CD Review: What Looks Like Crazy S/T EP by A review of the debut What Looks Like Crazy EP
Every once in awhile a band comes along and shakes things up. Rick Craft, DJ Zaruba, and Scott Kommer are Virginia’s own What Looks Like Crazy, and they do just that. The band’s self titled EP, which released over the summer, is defying what it means to be in the “pop rock” genre. Think Something Corporate meets The Maine and old Taking Back Sunday. By melding the catchiness of indie/pop with powerpop instrumentation, What Looks Like Crazy has created something different (and, surprise, it’s good!) Sometimes simplicity is best. This is the common thread throughout the EP, which is appealing to all audiences, because of universal themes. This is seen in “Mess of Me,” the third track. In the chorus, Zaruba sings “Girl, you’ve made a mess of me. Tell me the way that you want it to be, ‘cause I can’t keep waiting for you to finally see that you could be the one for me.” Yes, music snobs may scoff and say that they could write this in their sleep. However, what is more important in this song, one of the album’s best, is the overall sound: a blend of indie rock (see acoustic opening), but also how it contrasts with the more powerpop sound in the verses. The result is an insanely catchy song which will leave listeners tapping their fingers against the steering wheel, regardless of whether they want to or not. Equally catchy is “Drama’s Got a New Address,” which opens with a slight breakdown, reverting to the more “powerpop” side of things. You never once feel as though you’re listening to the same song over and over again, but you know that it is still WLLC because of the vocals. It is this mastering of what makes good pop, but also music with depth, that sets the band apart from the rest. The story-like quality of the songs and the genuineness of the lyrics are truly to be admired. In each of the five songs there is a scenario, each completely relatable. It could be argued that they lyrics tend to circulate around relationships and teenage heartbreak. This is really because of the actual composition of the songs, with each paid a great deal of individual attention. “18, Going on Crazy” is a perfect example of this, where there is so much detail: the opening is simple and the band successfully steers away from falling strictly into the “teenage girl rock” category. Don’t get me wrong, however, as teenage girls will still love this band. If you know me, you know that an album’s closing song is pretty much a deal-breaker. “Boys That Play Guitar” would have been a good song regardless of where it was placed, but it does an amazing job of closing the EP. “Don’t trust boys that play guitar, I know he’s easy on the eyes. But he’ll break your heart, he’ll tear you apart.” Listen carefully and listeners will hear vocal similarities to the opening song, “Waste of Time,” which brings the EP full circle. This, ladies and gents, is what makes a good album. Unfortunately, What Looks Like Crazy does not have many tour dates posted aside from a couple in NY, NJ, and VA. While you’re waiting for them to go on tour, do yourself a favor and check out this EP. Be it the lyrics, the contagious melodies, unique composition, or a combination of these things, I guarantee that you will find something to love about this band, regardless of your preconceptions of pop rock. No matter what genres of music you are typically into, chances are this EP will change your mind.
