has been impressing audiences in both clubs and on festival stages with his
high energy performances, top-notch harmonica and accordion playing, and roots
rocking song-writing. He incorporates
blues, zydeco and swamp-pop to come up with a unique sound.Sansone grew up Building on the traditional styles of Sonny Boy Williamson, Little
Walter, and Big Walter, Johnny has forged his own style with horn-like phrasing
and monster tone. His showmanship earned
him the nickname “Jumpin’ Johnny Sansone.”
Johnny joined Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters in the 1980’s, furthering
his reputation as a top notch singer and showman. While with Earl, he toured with such blues
legends as Robert Lockwood Jr., and Jimmy Rogers.Sansone moved to
New Orleans in 1989, taking the city’s blues scene by storm. He played with many Crescent City legends as
well as developing his own sound. Johnny
quickly gained a loyal audience, moving from musical strength to musical
strength and never failing to impress.
Sansone’s
recording career has also been very fruitful.
His first solo record, Where Y’At? on Kingsnake records, featured Ronnie Earl, and Sansone’s original
songwriting. Mr Goodthing for the Ichabon label, before creating Crescent
City Moon on Rounder records. Crescent
City Moon swept the OffBeat music awards in 1996, with its haunting title
track and good time party tunes all from Sansone’s original pen. Sansone followed Crescent City Moon
with the well-received Watermelon Patch.
Johnny has also recorded as a member of Sansone, Krown, and Fohl; the
Grammy-nominated Tribute to Mississippi Fred McDowell; and the Juno
award-winning Radio Guantanamo by Jane Bunnett, and with Tab Benoit for Voice
of the Wetlands.Sansone has
earned a reputation for his powerful festival performances. His set at the New Orleans Jazz Festival is
always a yearly highlight. He has been
featured at Jazz and Blues Festivals throughout the US and Europe. He has also performed at such hallowed halls
as the Lincoln Center in New York City.
Jumpin’ Johnny
Sansone’s rich musical experiences, deep traditional roots, and endlessly
creative playing and songwriting have earned him the respect of his peers, and
a place at the top of everyone’s list of modern musical masters.
