Of the few phases of one of the youngest genres of music, there hasn't
been a time that has been defined with as much confusion and
uncertainty as what surrounds hip hop today. It's times like these
that build the most anger and frustration but also spawn the most
innovative and fearless minds. It is a time of both ambiguity and
excitement for new horizon. Out of the vacuum of creativity and
yearning for new frontier, Retrospect is born. Comprised of two
emcees, Quotes and Def Poet, Retrospect is as new and rejuvenating as
the time. Using the formula of extracting from the legendary artists
of music’s history to create new and compelling music for the future,
Retrospect has effectively succeeded in what they set out to
accomplish: to create the essence that is lacking in the bombardment
of the monotonous music of today. Strong-armed by their phrase,
"remember that feeling," Retrospect brings the organic feeling and
emotion that used to be so prevalent in not only the history of
hip-hop but also in all genres, and they inject that substance into the
sonic potentiality of today.
Retrospect's music has been described as soulful, refreshing, and
unheard of. Hailing from inspirations such as Blackstarr, the Roots
and A Tribe Called Quest, Retrospect makes thought provoking music
exciting and brand new. Instead of using trite formulas such has drug
trafficking and twenty-two inch rims to incite entertainment, Retrospect takes
things back to the basics: imagination.
Retrospect has performed in various venues and clubs in the
Chicagoland area such as the Funky Buddha and Wild hare. They have
performed at events varying from music showcases in schools to the
nationwide annual Dunk Exchange. They have also shared the stage with new
and anticipated artists such as PAC DIV.
Retrospect has put out a project called the Light and is currently
working on their up and coming, highly anticipated mixtape, SUPERHERO.
Their songs have rocked various nightclubs in Chicago and graced the
airways of the windy city’s most well known hip hop and R&B radio
station, WGCI.
