Description
By Your Side was written by Jonathon Franklin after visiting the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC. The end of the tour challenged visitors to do something about modern day genocide. Deeply moved by the experience, Jonathon woke up the next morning with a poem titled by your side. With accompaniment by Candice Gima and of course the members of Streetlight Cadence, the poem is brought to life in the form of alternative rap.

I will not walk by you anymore No I will stand and fight, never indifferent again I have Found a life worth living for And I’ll be by your side until the end Deliberate destruction systematically, Of a religious group — a foreign nationality is By definition an offence against humanity, That I imagine is some alternate reality Grab my morning Starbucks to get me through the day and I could hardly care about these homeless children far away Refugees in our society are begging just to stay, And we complain that life will suck until they go away so We call these people problems, we argue and we gripe And we label them as one and it’s the same stereotype They’re the thieves, and they’re the killers, we’re not safe while they are here So let's move out of the neighborhood to shelter us from fear Better yet, lets simply ship em out of our society, Cause they’re rebels and they’re different and we never will agree Push em back again and separate them from humanity Holocaust was just a name for what we did last century So I will not walk by you anymore No I will stand and fight, never indifferent again I have Found a life worth living for And I’ll be by your side until the end And when I say we, I speak of Humans, Are we not, And I think I’m not responsible with each indifferent thought, No each person is defined by what they do, not what they ought, So do something, I am asking you directly, change the plot Die for someone truly there’s no greater love than this, But ignoring screams is like betraying friendship with a kiss Cause every single victim breathes their last with the same wish That I would care enough to come and alter all of this For Darfur, Rwanda, Bosnia and all the Earth I’ll wake each day and question what my life is worth, Will I walk by every victim on the street-corner I see, Or will I stop and help cause I know that you’d do the same for me So I will not walk by you anymore No I will stand and fight, never indifferent again I have Found a life worth living for And I’ll be by your side until the end Yeah I can imagine harmony and peace love And Lennon’s singing I’m dreamer from the clouds above
