The Train Tracks Don't Run Through Souwilpa No More

Album: Things that I know Something About

Keith Smith

Duration

Description

Written after my wife noted that her old home place had changed forever. She reminisced about how she would play around the railroad tracks. My brother-in-law said, "Yeah, the train tracks don't run through Souwilpa no more". I heard a song there, so I grabbed my guitar and started writing. Harmonica mimics the sound of the whistle, acoustic guitar the first far away sounds of the train, the electric guitar is meant to recall the sound of the train up close to the listener.

Lyrics

Down in South Alabama in the loblolly pines, was a rail crossing on the AT&N line Souwilpa was the home a a cute Little Country Girl She put her pennies in a row in the railroad tracks The train would come along and smash them flat And she treated those flattend coins like a string of pearls Chours And that train rolled on and time rolled by And that little girl grew up to be my bride And the AT&N's gone the way of the dinosaur And now the cows don't graze up at her back door And her Ma's gone home to live with the Lord And the train tracks don't run through Souwilpa no more When she wanted her way that girl would fuss and cry But Ma would lay a fly swatter on her back side And that's how she came to learn just about every thing that she knows And with the muck squishing up between her barefoot toes She's run like the wind down that muddy dirt road To wave to the engineer and hear the whistle blow Chours And that train rolled on and time rolled by And that little girl grew up to be my bride And the AT&N's gone the way of the dinosaur And now the cows don't graze up at her back door And her Ma's gone home to live with the Lord And the train tracks don't run through Souwilpa no more And now her Daddy's got a lot of time to kill Since he's retired from the old saw mill And there's not a lot to do in a place like Souwilpa no how And now the grass grows up where the train once ran and his daughter ran off with this guitar man And the mill took his hearing a long, long time ago. Chours And that train rolled on and time rolled by And that little girl grew up to be my bride And the AT&N's gone the way of the dinosaur And now the cows don't graze up at her back door And her Ma's gone home to live with the Lord And the train tracks don't run through Souwilpa no more
