Description
Song from the debut LP of this singer-songwriter-guitarist, who cut his teeth in the New York City punk rock scene before striking out on his own. A heartfelt tribute to everyone affected by the tragic events of 9/11, this track explores the disturbing alienation experienced by those who did not know a victim of the attacks personally, but felt a gnawing and lingering sense of tremendous, senseless loss all the same.
Lyrics
What do you do when you wake up one day And the word you know ends right before your eyes Everything that made sense before Is gone away and you can’t even cry Can’t dig in the rubble or save a single soul Trapped in the sky or in the fire below The hole in my heart is too big to measure And this agony feels like it’ll live forever Three thousand angels born in an hour Dark clouds above the flames and paper rain Can’t figure it out, even though we were in it Didn’t know them at all, but I think they’re a part of me A city creams and mourns its fallen pillars Sea of anger wants more blood to spill Well I’m not sure that’ll do all that much good, now What becomes of victims who are turned to kill Three thousand angels born in an hour Dark clouds above the flames and paper rain Can’t figure it out, even though we were in it Didn’t know them at all, but I think they’re a part of me Don’t try to explain it all away Don’t tell me tomorrow will be a new day Some mysteries don’t have an answer why Like where the smoke goes when it leaves the sky Sit here and look into my eyes I don’t care anymore what’s the truth and what were lies I don’t need the man behind the podium today Just take my hand and tell me that you’ll stay with me, oh Stay with me Stay with me, oh Three thousand angels born in an hour Confusion rage and pain is all we feel Couldn’t figure it out, even though we were right there in it I didn’t know them at all, but now I see Now I see Now I see Now I see
