“Gold” is a gorgeous soul ballad that recalls the genius of Ray Charles, Leon Russell and Elton John. No mean achievement. With a tinge of country-gospel to turn eyes heavenward and send tears streaming down penitent cheeks. There is a sense of rock n’ roll authenticity that even suggests the sinner’s remorse of the Stones circa Exile on Main St (or Sheryl Crow if one prefers a modern analogue). A potent combination that belies the barefaced simplicity of the performance.
