Lyrics

Times are bad, and that aint good, a good man only makes about half what he should. You don’t get the hours, you don’t get the pay, the new economy got in his way. His grandpa served and his daddy did too. He was taught young that’s what you do. Paid his taxes and seen things through, and now he’s stuck and don’t know what to do. He had a trade school diploma and an Army discharge. He was working hard but he was living large. His high school sweetheart was a hell of a girl. He was happy they brought the kids in the world. It never shoulda worked out this way; he should get an honest dollar, for an honest day. The imports came and took it all away. Now he stands short without the money to pay his way. But things can change quick with a political vote, they cut back his hours and they called in his note. He stood there short without the means to pay, and watched as he saw the man take it all away. Thing that really gets him, that he can’t hide, it aint about the money it’s more his pride. He never did wrong and he never lied, and that’s what tears him up inside. Now he sits back with a drink in his hand, a man that don’t work aint much of a man He can’t even look his own kids in the eye, when he does see his wife all she does is cry. It never shoulda worked out this way; he should get an honest dollar, for an honest day. The imports came and took it all away. Now he stands short without the money to pay his way. He didn’t want it all just his peace of the pie. But the harder he worked and the harder he tried. He sees little justice in his life now. He tried to hold it all together somehow. He once stood tall and he even bragged. He believed in God and that American flag. But there’s one thing he don’t understand. Is how it all slipped through his hands. Now he lives alone with a broken will, thanks to the gang up on capitol hill. While they fly around in their chartered planes, he lost everything if his good name. It never shoulda worked out this way; he should get an honest dollar, for an honest day. The imports came and took it all away. Now he stands short without the money to pay his way. Big health care plans, and new bank loans, don’t matter much when you lose your home. He just wants to work with his good hands, and willing to give a cut to the man. Back when this country was really grand, we cared about the people and the little man. Seems we forgot and turned a blind eye, you shoulda ought to make it just as long as you try. Somehow somewhere we lost our way, but we can take it all back come Election Day. This time around there should be hell to pay, let’s take it all back come Election Day.
