Written in 1993 or 1994 after reading an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer about life in one of the rough parts of town. People there expressed frustration about trying to earn an honest living while the crime rates were so high.

He came from the north end of town And fought to stay alive He went to church on Sundays Did what he could to survive He worked in a dungeon by daytime And slept in fear every night' And he prayed for deliverance From his daily fight He slept with an aging innocence Into the morning hours He woke to the sound of gunfire Feeling the heat of its power And life in his neighborhood Is just a matter of fate And he prays for deliverance He hopes he's not too late Ooo there is sunshine in his eyes And all the painful trials they come and go But he tries not to show it Oh no He takes a walk in the park and Breathes the air of freedom Then he takes his good old time On his way back to the sweatshop He's got 59 years behind him He don't know what's before him But he prays for deliverance To restore him He prays for deliverance He prays for deliverance
